Book Overview

These days, it seems that everyone has a strong opinion about how to teach young children to read. Some may brush off the current tension as nothing more than one more round of the reading wars. Others may avoid the clash altogether due to the uncivilized discourse that sometimes results. Certainly, sorting the signal from the noise is no easy task.

In this leading-edge book, authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates address this tension as a critical opportunity to look closely at the research, reevaluate current practices, and embrace new possibilities for an even stronger enactment of balanced literacy.

From phonological processing to brain research to orthographic mapping to self-teaching hypothesis, Shifting the Balance cuts through the rhetoric (and the sciencey science) to offer readers a practical guide to decision-making about beginning reading instruction. The authors honor the balanced literacy perspective while highlighting common practices to reconsider and revise--all through a lens of what's best for the students sitting in front of us.

Across six shifts, each chapter

  • identifies a common instructional practice to reconsider
  • explores various misunderstandings that establish and keep that practice in play
  • shares scientific research to support its reconsideration
  • proposes an instructional shift to apply a new Read More chevron_right

   Great Resource
Our staff used this book for a book study. We learned so much about phonemic awareness, oral language, orthographic mapping, high frequency words, etc.

   This Book is Amazing
The book talks about how teachers feel about changing how reading is taught. The Science of Reading research is turned into something teachers can understand by these ladies. This book doesn't get into the reading wars. It makes comparisons to balanced and structured literacy in a way that is honest. The book allows teachers in the balance literacy field to see how practices they are comfortable with can be adjusted to better address The Science of Reading research. This should be included in higher education's instruction for every teacher.

Perfect book for teachers caught between balanced literacy and the science of reading.
The book I ordered was Know Better, Do Better. Being a language teacher, the shift that was presented in that book was mind blowing. I was looking for a book that was science-based. It was found in a book. The book is very easy to read. The misunderstandings of reading are explained. The book is written to make sense to teachers without a lot of scientific jargon. This book is what you need if you want to shift away from leveled readers and focus more on science like me.

   Fantastic Book!
The book is amazing. It's perfect for teachers who are working in a balanced literacy curriculum but want to incorporate the science of reading into their instruction. There are many great ideas and practices to re-examine and ponder. I think it's a great idea!

Thanks to Burkins and Yates, we now know how the science of reading and balanced literacy ideas overlap and build on each other. I will be using this book in class. Thank you so much!

   Not what I thought
It was disappointing. Getting your money back for books is something I would be first in line for. Don't waste time.
