New York Times bestselling adult author of The Bear and the Nightingale makes her middle grade debut with a creepy, spellbinding ghost story destined to become a classic

After suffering a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie only finds solace in books. So when she happens upon a crazed woman at the river threatening to throw a book into the water, Ollie doesn't think--she just acts, stealing the book and running away. As she begins to read the slender volume, Ollie discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, the two brothers who both loved her, and a peculiar deal made with the smiling man, a sinister specter who grants your most tightly held wish, but only for the ultimate price.

Ollie is captivated by the tale until her school trip the next day to Smoke Hollow, a local farm with a haunting history all its own. There she stumbles upon the graves of the very people she's been reading about. Could it be the story about the smiling man is true? Ollie doesn't have too long to think about the answer to that. On the way home, the school bus breaks down, sending their teacher back to the farm for help. But the strange bus driver has some advice for the kids left behind in his care: Best get moving. At nightfall they'll come for the rest of you. Nightfall is, indeed, fast Read More chevron_right

   Simple Halloween middle grade
The concept of this story is really cool and I enjoyed the first chunk of the book, too. Overall, I liked the creepy use of scarecrows, the historical story and that it was fun, too. There isn’t much character development here. She's not the nicest girl for most of the book and she snapsis mean to a girl named Coco a lot. She never apologizes for her actions, neither does Brian which is that the sad aspect isn't addressed. Before we talk about school supplies, it will need to be a discussion topic for parents. But if you like a good Halloween story, I recommend getting one from your library.

A spooky, unputdownable, fun read for kids and grown ups
I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of Small Spaces, which is why I'm reviewing this on release day. I almost never read middle grade books and I'm generally not a fan of spooky stories, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Once I started reading, I simply could not put it down and read it in one very enjoyable and scary stretch. He has created an amazing group of characters that I think will be very relatable to young people, and has created a really interesting twist on classic ghost stories. This is a perfect book to read before Halloween. If you get it for your kid, you might have to fight with them over who gets to read it first!
