Martin and Rebecca Cate, founders and owners of Smuggler's Cove (the most acclaimed tiki bar of the modern era) take you on a colorful journey into the lore and legend of tiki: its birth as an escapist fantasy for Depression-era Americans; how exotic cocktails were invented, stolen, and re-invented; Hollywood starlets and scandals; and tiki's modern-day revival, in this James Beard Award-winning cocktail book.
Featuring more than 100 delicious recipes (original and historic), plus a groundbreaking new approach to understanding rum, Smuggler's Cove is the magnum opus of the contemporary tiki renaissance. Whether you're looking for a new favorite cocktail, tips on how to trick out your home tiki grotto, help stocking your bar with great rums, or inspiration for your next tiki party, Smuggler's Cove has everything you need to transform your world into a Polynesian Pop fantasia.

The best book for tiki cocktails
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
The Cove of Smuggler is the book to have for Tikki cocktails. So far I have taken three of the drinks and have all been winners. One of the best things about the book is that the author lists 7 types of rum and the recipes provide a specific type of bottle instead of a specific bottle, meaning that your home bar needs only 7 bottles of rum. Many cocktail books call for expensive bottles, which becomes both specific and unwieldy after awhile. The recipes aren 't quite as complicated, which I appreciate as well. I have books from other famous bars and for some books, making a drink is a huge project. I look forward to working my way through more recipes ''. The writing of the book is fantastic as well. It gives a great account of the origins of ti culture in the United States and how Smuggler came to be Cove.

The only tiki cocktail book you'll ever need
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
This is a beautiful book. This is a preliminary review, but this is one of the best-looking, best-reading cocktail books I have picked up in a very long time. Martin Cate's writing is clear and amusing with photos and art on almost every page, and Martin Cate's writing is clear and entertaining. There are more than a hundred recipes scattered throughout the chapters, along with well-written information about the history of the Tikil culture. Rum and how it is made is everything about rum and how it is made. The drinks are making the drinks. This book is not only a delight to read, but it would be an appropriate gift for the cocktail lover in your life.

funny and unique history and the cast of legendary and ...
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
To say that this is a masterpiece is insufficient. Martin Cate has created an indispensable tiki Bible, with all tiki's rich, funny and unique history and the cast of legendary and iconic characters who made it, and the many saved it. Great stuff, a beautiful looking book too, and loaded with great photos and recipes making me want to bring out the rum at home and return soon to San Francisco's Smuggler's Cove! Martin Cate : Thanks Martin Cate!

A lovely tome IF you're a cocktail snob
Derived From Web , Feb 17, 2021
The book is great to look at and the information about tiki as a subculture is fabulous, but it is not a beautiful book for cocktail recipes. For example, rums are listed by type, but without the use of the common nomenclature that makes it easy to shop. Be prepared to spend a lot of time going over examples of things like pot still lightly aged and lightly blended as opposed to the more common terms like light, dark, gold or spiced. I find that this reduces real-world usability and makes the recipes more useful if you're the type of person who would describe himself as a cocktail snob. When specific brands are listed, it is an exclusively higher end, costlier brands. The lack of accessibility is the opposite of the tiki spirit to me. It is a shame because the cultural information is terrific.

Encylopedic history of tiki cocktails - great read!
Derived From Web , Jan 22, 2020
Having grown up with Trader Vic's locations and after living in Hawaii for several years, I am fascinated with tiki bars and cocktails. When I moved to San Francisco in 2019, I was thrilled to learn that Martin Cate's Smuggler Cove was only 2 blocks from my home. Unfortunately, every time I visited the bar, the seating has been limited and cramped, but the cocktails were always excellent. Martin and Rebecca's book has become one of my main bar references, I can now enjoy their fantastic tiki cocktails in the comfort of my home. I also enjoyed his meticulously encyclopedic research into the history of the tiki drinks. In the not too distant future, I hope to move back to the Hawaiian Islands and set up a tiki-focused establishment. This book will be one of my inspirations.
