Book Overview

From acclaimed poet and creator of the popular twitter account @SoSadToday comes the darkly funny and brutally honest collection of essays that Roxane Gay called sad and uncomfortable and their own kind of gorgeous.
Melissa Broder always struggled with anxiety. In the fall of 2012, she went through a harrowing cycle of panic attacks and dread that wouldn't abate for months. So she began @sosadtoday, an anonymous Twitter feed that allowed her to express her darkest feelings, and which quickly gained a dedicated following. In SO SAD TODAY, Broder delves deeper into the existential themes she explores on Twitter, grappling with sex, death, love low self-esteem, addiction, and the drama of waiting for the universe to text you back.
With insights as sharp as her humor, Broder explores--in prose that is both ballsy and beautiful, aggressively colloquial and achingly poetic--questions most of us are afraid to even acknowledge, let alone answer, in order to discover what it really means to be a person in this modern world.

   sadly relatable 😩❤️💔
I adore that when Melissa wrote this book, she clearly didn 't hold back. She lets it all out even if it is uncomfortable, shocking or mortifying. Thoughts and experiences that you have also had and think OMG me too.

Great to have an honest author who admits that birth is not a miracle
The intro to this book is everything I agree with some of her natalistic tendencies and her blunt comedic honesty. I don 't identify with the author's stories necessarily that she feels like she should have been born.

I didn't know somebody could write so much only about themselves
A very fast-fire collection of extremely focused essays. The pace is so intense, and the tone is so intense, it's hard to read, but I am not sure that I wanted to read so much from somebody so obsessed with themselves, their eating disorders, anxiety, depression and addictions. If you have ever accidentally stayed up all night with a wild, unconventional person who cannot stop talking about every aspect of their somewhat hyperintelligent, hyper-aware self, then you know exactly what this book is like.

If my thoughts were on paper, they would be this book.
This book was somehow able to describe the way my brain works when I thought there was nothing and no one capable of understanding. After reading this, you will feel like Broder knows inside and out, but for me it was mostly because I saw myself in each and every one of her essays. This book will make you laugh out loud because it is so ridiculously real, but also so unbelievably blunt. Reading it feels like you are having a conversation where someone finally gets it. The most remarkable element of this book for me was the comfort of knowing that there are others with this level of self-awareness and that Broder's writing is just a representation of the experiences of all those who support her and relate to her. If you find yourself fighting in almost any form, this book may give you a clearer understanding of yourself.

   A very emotional read
Ms Broder holds nothing back in this collection of personal essays deeply personal. After reading this, you feel like you know her from the inside out. Depression, addiction, sex, writing, her most vulnerable secrets and real thoughts... There are times when her destructive mentality and behaviors cause me anxiety and reminds me of some painful and sad memories.
