Some writers are good at drawing a literary curtain over reality, and then there are writers who raise the veil and lead us to see for the first time. Krivak belongs to the latter. The Sojourn, about a war and a family and coming-of-age, does not present a single false moment of sentimental creation. Rather, it looks deeply into its characters' lives with wisdom and humanity, and, in doing so, helps us experience a distant past that feels as if it could be our own. --National Book Award judges' citation

The Sojourn is the story of Jozef Vinich, who was uprooted from a 19th-century mining town in Colorado by a family tragedy and returns with his father to an impoverished shepherd's life in rural Austria-Hungary. When World War One comes, Jozef joins his adopted brother as a sharpshooter in the Kaiser's army, surviving a perilous trek across the frozen Italian Alps and capture by a victorious enemy.

A stirring tale of brotherhood, coming-of-age, and survival, that was inspired by the author's own family history, this novel evokes a time when Czechs, Slovaks, Austrians, and Germans fought on the same side while divided by language, ethnicity, and social class in Read More chevron_right

I was hounded into reading this trilogy!
I have re- read the trilogy a couple times since I gave in and read it. This series sets up Drizzt's history and lays it out for you to follow along with him. This series takes you through every facet of Drizzt's life. His education by the evil Drow, his relationships with his parents, siblings and fellow dark elves, his adventures below and above the surface are just some of the things he has done. R.A. Salvatore takes you on a bumpy ride through the Underdark's tunnels to meet new friends and enemies. ' The Dark Elf Trilogy' is the perfect start to a fantastic series of books that will keep you entertained for years, and keep you coming back for more'

   Amazing legacy series revisited
How does one review a book that you have read many times and have to replace paperback books, for your child to read his first book in the series? It is a great time to Re- experience this Series in many years and have your son yelling at you to hurry up because he is reading them with me as well! You will love the characters and their trials.

   2021 - Sibling Reading Challenge
A thrilling conclusion to the prequel trilogy that spawned a thousand thousand DandD characters, a multitude of Elder Scrolls drow rangers, and the magical fantasies that we often find ourselves in. Combat and battle become emotional. The readers are not able to tear their eyes away because of the tension. Readers can be reminded that there are novel ideas being shared.

Yup the books just seem to get better...
The author continues to hold my interest because I have figured it out. As I read these books, I am always surprised by what happens. I am completely and happily surprised whenever I try to guess at the outcome of an event. One of the rare types of authors that have an amazing imagination and the ability to capture it and put it into a book that many can be entertained is this author.

This is where it got repetitive
The first two books were very good. There is no real danger for the main character in this one, you know the premise.

   Encompassing
I was entertained and interested the whole way through. After many years away from the series, I was back into the adventure and found the order of the stories confusing, but I'm new and I found my old friends again. His feelings of being an outsider were related to his frustration at the Dark Elf honor. I remind myself that it's just a book and that there's a good story being told.
