My go-to book for the last 15 years.
For 25 years I have been a music teacher in small schools. I had never taken a course on how to use sound equipment, and learned most things by accident. I discovered this book for the first time in the mid-90s and have used it ever since. It is set like an encyclopedia so that you can skip to the sections that relate to your current needs. I haven 't found another reference that is so useful. I also use it for training my students on how to use sound equipment. It is the book that I continue to recommend to my musictheatre colleagues.

Amazing book, but indefensible print quality. No, seriously - indefensible.
This book is unquivocally the Bible for anyone working in pro - audio. It explains everything you need to know in sufficient detail and is indexed to make future reference much easier. The writing is absolutely terrible, however the printing quality is absolutely excellent. The type font is difficult to read and the letters are a little mudgy, making it even worse. But what blows my mind about printing quality is that there are actually splotches, lines and cut text from photocopying the pages! You know that the cruddy photocopier you have in the office is? It's kind of like that, I'm disappointed that the text has not been updated to bring the audio pros up to speed on the digital revolution. But I am SHOCKED that the publisher hasn't corrected the printing defects while reprinting the book. SHAME ON HAL-LEONARD, but as for Gary Davis, Ralph Jones and Yamaha? Good luck on ya.

This book is incredible! It's worth every penny you pay for it.
I used to DJ in Trinidad about twenty five years ago, and if I knew what I learned from this book, I would have done better when sounding off against other massive DJ sound systems.

Great but a little deep for me....
This book is well done, but a lot of it went over my head.

   Good stuff Maynard
You don 't even have to know much math, he breaks it really well. But if you don 't already have the basics of electrical circuits under your belt, you might get lost in the latter half of the book. He gives the whole Enchilada away, great book!

   A must
I am a stagehand with a focus on audio. Every person I have met in the fields says, this book is where they learned their trade.

But it is very informative.

   Comprehensive, with very academic detail...
...I bought this with the intent of understanding the math that underlies the sound reproduction from source to end point, and it does a tremendous job. Some of the detail is graduate-level electrical engineering, but it seemed to me so clearly and concisely that a journeyman audiophile like me gained good enough foundational knowledge, that is what I was after. This book will help me understand reviews and allow me to shuffle more clearly through audiophile jargon, and I am sure it will help me select equipment with much greater confidence that it will fit my particular listening parameters.

It tells you pretty much everything you need to know about architecting and ...
My whole life I have been interested in audio - electronics. I have always had a lot of technical questions that I have never addressed adequately. This book gives it away just like that. It tells you pretty much everything you need to know about architecting and establishing a system of sound reinforcement. They don 't shy away from math or detailed block diagrams, so that this is a pretty detailed book on a very technical subject. I am taking a local sound class at the live community college and this was one of the books recommended for the class. If you want a book that tells you pretty much everything you need to know about audio engineering, this is your book.

All about sound. Must have for any serious musician.
If you are a serious musician, you probably already have a copy of this or have it studied in a class. There are lots of scientific concepts written in a way that anyone can grasp. This provides an excellent and thorough understanding of sound, music and the technical aspects of capturing, repeating, amplifying and so much more. Want to have a strong foundation in sound and music? This book is important to study.
