Sad and depressing

This book was written for children, but would have made most children want to commit suicide in my opinion. The father goes to jail. The dog gets half of his head blown off. The father gets back from jail and dies. The dog dies. The final is at the end. This story has won the Newbery Award and is praised. I don 't much care about how it is written.

I love stories about dogs, so I really liked this article. I have read a lot of dog books and this one would be in my top five. I loved how the boy wanted to learn reading and at the end he met the teacher and learned. It was sad that Sounder died. I wish there was a series ''.

Who can resist Sounder?

I hope he fills some of his winter days by reading a chapter or two a day. He is super smart, but still sitting and reading has its difficulties. The book is a great story and I know that once he gets into it, he'll want to keep reading.

A well told story that gripped my heart.

I know that this is a children's book, but it is truly one that anyone of any age can read and should read. You see the effects of racism and Jim Crow through the eyes of a boy who was forced to grow up much too soon. As a writer, I was impressed by the parallels between the father and his faithful dog, Sounder. Honestly, the entire book is sad, though also very captivating. I read it in an afternoon and recommend it wholeheartedly!

In the canon of children's books...

This book has earned its place on the reading list of young people. Sometimes colloquial, honest prose and fiction reads as a slice of history. Written by a scholar in history and language, the book will enrich the appreciation and depth of the young reader in both. Indeed, the best of fiction reads like a biography. Young people will relate to this book on several levels : as a solid, well-paced and deep story, as a young person's experience of their family and society at that time, as well as a good array of human emotion. Written by a good academic in the 60s about a time much earlier in the century, its vocabulary is not watered, nor is the power of the story.

It was written by a White Dude in the 1960s, and is VERY evident. My son was offended and annoyed. I 'll tear it up and throw it away. I wish publishers would review their older books and reedit or pull them.
