Book Overview

Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic

Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age sixteen, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She's been charged with supervising twelve-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon.

But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon's droid J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador's son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest.

Rich internal third-person dialogue reveals dollops of inner turmoil for each character at key moments as well as providing some much-needed world-building to make this a winning choice. A great read for Star Wars fans young and old. -- Kirkus Reviews

   Terrific Book for All Ages!
This book is fantastically written and tells a wonderful story! The author does a great job of introducing new characters and fleshing them thoroughly. This book may be aimed at younger readers, but is not written in this way. Anyone, at any age, can read and enjoy this book. I am 51, an avid reader and I loved it!

The High Republic is wonderful new stars wars content.
After reading and thoroughly enjoying Light of the Jedi and Into the Dark, I was not planning on picking up this book too, buuuut after reading through the truly pathetic furious reviews left by grown men on a book made for CHILDREN, I was more than happy to pull out my wallet and buy it.

   Fun
This was much better than the last book by High Republic that I read. The characters were good, and it was just engaging Star Wars fun. I do like how it is tied in this era to the other book and I think it will be cool to have these individual books that all connect subtly.

   Star Wars Instant Classic
This book is great for all levels of reading, don 't let the junior reading level throw you off!! It is a new addition to the great story of High Republic.

Great start to the middle grade novels
Out of the Shadows, really looking forward to it!

   An un expected gem!!!
This is simply one of the best middle schools - reading books I have ever encountered, part of the inaugural round of novels for the multimedia project The High Republic. It follows the adventures of a group of teens who are living in a chaotic situation, after the Great Disaster in Hetzal. Marooned in an uninhabited planet. But the real test, and what makes this book a gem, is facing the greatest enemy, themselves. I won 't say more, but rather the pull of the dark side via fear, anger, etc. is treated exactly as it should be and feels very relevant, if you ignore this one merely because it is good, it is really's middle grade. The result was very good.

   Unfortunate
The High Republic was going to be a fresh start, eventually something new to get behind. The choice of the author is unfortunate.

A competently written yet generic Star Wars adventure
Everything light of the Jedi by Charles Soule was a test of courage. I know that as a middle-grade novel, I should not expect particularly sophisticated writing. When the book's main characters are, however, either underdeveloped or obnoxious, it makes for a frankly boring reading experience. The plot, a group of teenagers stranded on an unknown planet, is well told, but the characters grate. Especially the main Jedi Knight, who was just knighted at 15. The narrative makes a point of calling her a genius, but the prose gives nothing to indicate why this is. Tell yourself, don 't show. This fact makes the emotional ending of the book frankly absurd.

How NOT to write a Star Wars book
This book is beyond boring ; even my kid, whom I bought it for, did not enjoy it. Also save your money, it is so much better out there.
