Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

You don't need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That's the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side. When Mr. Kleon was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. The talk went viral, and its author dug deeper into his own ideas to create Steal Like an Artist, the book. The result is inspiring, hip, original, practical, and entertaining. And filled with new truths about creativity: Nothing is original, so embrace influence, col- lect ideas, and remix and re-imagine to discover your own path. Follow your interests wherever they take you. Stay smart, stay out of debt, and risk being boring--the creative you will need to make room to be wild and daring in your imagination.

Save your money and listen to the speech on You Tube.
I liked what this author had to say but this was not a book. I asked where the rest of it was when I got to the end. Where are the useful things? The author of Steal Like an Artist gave a TED Talk on the internet. The entire book was in an eleven minute speech. Listen to the speech and save your money.

Appears simple but filled will many life nuggets.
When you open the book, it appears simple, but as you read through it, you will see it is filled with life lessons. It needs to be read more than once and with a note book in its hand. The only reason it isn't a 5 is because of the binding. When reading a book, it requires two hands to read. The book has a flap that serves as a bookmark, but once you get halfway into the book, it serves little use. Writing the book you want to read is my favorite advice.

   Loved it!!!
I have been creating for over 50 years, but I work on my day job more. I really needed this. These are things that don't have an art degree.

   Simple and inspiring read
The book has good insights that make it an inspiring and motivational read. The rest of the book was more of a case of the author sharing his personal preferences on how he gets things done, which is different for everyone in reality.

   Confused but not confounded...
I bought the book without reading any reviews. I was able to lift the guilt of stealing things to make mine. He explained the differences between the two. The advice is full of errors which makes us have more ideas to live the mess of our lives. I can relate to this a lot because I am not an artist. Thank you for that!

   Almost a JOKE
The book is useless. There are little tidbits of thought. It feels like something on a site where you have to click through a lot of ads and never get any meaningful content. I read through it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. Don't spend your money.

How To Have A Productive Life Fueled By Creativity
I lost interest in the book when I started reading it. I'm happy I kept going. There are suggestions in the book for how to feed your creative side. Even if you want to pursue a career in an industry that isn't necessarily considered creative, this book is a great resource. The author encourages people to embrace the work of artists. Use their work to create something of your own. Being disciplined, not seeking validation, and indulge in the type of work that truly meshes with you are some of the additional advice. The book could be read in an hour.
