This Description may be from another edition of this product.
As the early morning mist clears on Thanksgiving Sunday, the homes of Three Pines come to life--all except one.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal and yet a world away. Jane Neal, a long-time resident of Three Pines, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more but Gamache smells something foul this holiday season.and is soon certain that Jane died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter. .
STIL LIFE
With this award-winning first novel, Louise Penny introduces an engaging hero in Inspector Gamache, who commands his forces--and this series--with power, ingenuity, and charm.
[An] auspicious debut. [Penny's] deceptively simple style masks the complex patterns of a well-devised plot.--Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review
A perfectly executed traditional mystery.--Denver Post

Good but sometimes a bit over the top
Cheryl , Sep 25, 2023
I liked the book overall, but sometimes the writing about the food and such was a bit much. I also did not understand the "horrible" reactions to Jane's painting at first and then the "brilliant" reactions to her images later. Some things did not make sense to me and it may be I was not paying attention or I just didn't understand. I enjoyed learning about the tension between English and Quebecois and I liked the references to the culture.

Read my first Louise Penny book!
Natalie S , Jun 24, 2023
My daughter gave me a few mystery books, as I had read all I had on hand. This book was by far the best and most well written. The way the author depicts in detail, you really feel as though you're a part of the village and the characters. I am really looking forward to reading more of the chief inspector Armand Gamache series!

This is a great series. Great characters, especially Inspector Gamache. I would love to live in Three Pines.

Mystery
Jane J , Oct 17, 2021
After reading "Still Life" I was hooked for good! This author writes so beautifully that you not only picture and feel the village of Three Pines but get to know the residents as though you were there and had become friends. One thing I found amazing was in each of her novels there is something mentioned about a real life event that is found in history!
My only warning is once you start reading Louise Penny's books you become addicted. |

For intelligent readers only!
Lauren B , May 27, 2021
Still Life is the first in a series that will number 17 when The Madness of Crowds comes out on August 24, 2021. Yes, I've preordered it, as I have every one after discovering this uniquely talented writer. Inspector Gamache rivals Poirot's intelligence and Sherlock Holmes ability to see fine detail where others see only broad outlines but it's his kindness, his humanity, his love of family, friends and colleagues that sets him apart and above. Louise Penny writes murder mysteries that expose the humanity of those charged with solving them and the people in their orbit. Still Life is finely written by an author with a scholar's vocabulary and the inclusion of italicized Quebecois French phrases (which continues throughout the series) makes this a delightful, if overall depressing read. Yes, Still Life is depressing, not a book to read in bed if you desire pleasant dreams; nonetheless, the characters and plotline will have you dashing to acquire book two as you fall down the rabbit hole! As an avid mystery reader, I absolutely despise being able to guess the ending and I'm delighted to report that it hasn't happened yet in Ms. Penny's first 16 books. Plus, I can now cuss fluently in Quebecois French!
