Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

For more than 15 years, Robert McKee's students have been taking Hollywood's top honors. His Story Seminar is the world's ultimate seminar for screenwriters, filmmakers, and novelists. Now, Robert McKee's Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting reveals the award-winning methods of the man universally regarded as the world's premier teacher on screenwriting and story. With Hollywood and publishing companies paying record sums for great stories, and audiences clamoring for originality, McKee's Story gives you the strategies you need to win the war on cliches.

Story is about form, not formula. McKee's insights cut to the hidden sources of storytelling, the decisive differences between mediocrity and excellence.

This audio goes well beyond the essential mechanics of screenwriting and is packed with examples from such film classics as Casablanca and Chinatown. Then, scene by sequence by act, he illuminates the principles of story design that take a writer's vision to brilliant realization. Story elevates the craft of screenwriting to an art form.

Take it from the pros; if you're serious about your writing, this is the audio that will help you to get your story from page to screen.

Buy it, toss the cover and read every chapter twice!
I have two copies of the book to ensure it is always nearby. It can be a challenge to comprehend in places, but worth the extra effort! In terms of characters driving narrative, review chapter 7 and examine writing. I found it easier to grasp McKee by writing one paragraph summary of each chapter as I progressed. It may be helpful to separate the two sections, one devoted to natural history and the other to law. I suggest reading the book in its entirety, beginning with chapter 1, "7," followed by "8," "9," "11," "12-16." The slip cover is so terrible, I almost fell over it. It's just that you throw it away. The hardcover book features a blue-purple cover and gold lettering.

   Not just for screenwriters.
There is very little in here that doesn't apply to ALL writing, he said. If you're reading through a book, I'd recommend reading through a simpler book first. If you're serious about your writing, this book is for you.

   Helped my writing
Side benefit was giving different perspective in my fiction writing, making it much better in my reviewers' minds, he said. Good book for someone who wants to learn more about the profession. I learned a lot, now understand how things come together and see how much more work there is with scriptwriting than writing novels, he said.

Before sitting to write your novel
You are not alone: In McKee's Story you will find everything you need to understand about structure and your deeper thinking in relation to the construction of values, characters, conflicts and rythms of a good story.

   Overblown
There are plenty of valuable nuggets of information out there, but it takes a lot of digging to find them. This would have been a good book at two-thirds its length, maybe a great book at half its length, he said. He also takes issue with the central theory that Hollywood is starving for great stories and writing.

   Powerful book of tools
I'm still not finished with this book. The book is a great introduction to the world of structure and the history of why writing styles work.

   Story IS Life
The food has given me so much insight into the universe. The best-selling book of all time.

   Truly enjoyed it
I am not a screenwriter nor do I plan to become one, Sosa said. I am a 61-year old amateur short story writer who has published some since the 1980s and failed with many others. I had a feeling, however, that Story could be arid or too complicated, he said. It turned out that this was one of the best books I've read this year. Amazingly, after 40 years of writing, this book has made me discover why the stories I published were good and why the others failed. It's certainly worth five stars, Mr. Rule told the judge.

   A staple for any writer
As someone who was a beginner in writing, this book helped put me on a better path to professional success.

   a slog of a read
This is not the kind of book you pick up and read through to the end. The problem is that the ideas are well-supported but it has the anecdotal quality of a manual.
