Strega Nona
Book Overview
This Description may be from another edition of this product.
When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works in this classic Caldecott Honor book from Tomie dePaola.
Strega Nona--Grandma Witch--is the source for potions, cures, magic, and comfort in her Calabrian town. Her magical everfull pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. In this retelling of an old tale, author-illustrator Tomie dePaola combines humor in the writing and warmth in the paintings as he builds the story to its hilarious climax.Frequently Asked Questions About Strega Nona

Fun book about a lesson learned.

I loved reading this book as a child. I was thrilled when I saw it on the shelf at BandN, but I wasn't happy with the price. I picked it up because it was a killer price on Amazon. The cost of not listening to important instruction is demonstrated by this story. The boy was told not to touch the witch's magic cooking pot, but does anyways and is dismayed when the town fills with spaghetti. Strega Nona tells the boy to eat all the spaghetti if he wants to clean up his mess. It teaches us about the consequences of our actions.

As an adult, I enjoy reading the same way I did when I was a child. It's been a constant request at night from a 3.5- and 5.5-yr old.

Grandma Witch

We need more books for boys and girls to read. It's an old folk tale and has great illustrations. Strega Nonna is the main character and is very generous to everyone. She helped Big Anthony with his stupidity. This is a book that children will love to read. I would love to have this book in my library of children's literature.

Happy to see this in print again!

I love the book. It is not like other mainstream children's stories that are all based on cartoon characters. It is a wonderful story. If you can believe it, there is a moral snuck in. I'm glad I was able to purchase it for my kids because I'm very happy to see it in print.

One of the BEST!

My kids liked this book. We read it hundreds of times together. I have gifted this title to many other young kids who love it and keep it in constant rotation. I bought two new copies of Strega Nona at my local bookstore a few years ago, and asked Mr. DePaola to personalize them for my kids. They were thrilled with the gifts. This book meant a lot to my children. A great gift for children with vivid imaginations.

Before gifting to your mother in law, make sure she knows you don’t think she’s a witch...
Derived From Web , Oct 5, 2020
As a child, my mother-in-law chose to call my baby Nona because I loved this book. When she asked my brother-in-law, who knows Italian, what Strega meant, he said it means witch grandma. She has a good sense of humor, but asked me if I thought she was a witch.

There is a fun story about a witch who tries to use her magic pasta pot I remember the book from when I was a child, but I don't remember the story as well. The illustrations and story are very good. It reminds me of the apprentices.
