Book Overview

Read the novel that ignited the phenomenon
In the year 2022, gamers rejoice as Sword Art Online - a VRMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) like no other - debuts, allowing players to take full advantage of the ultimate in gaming technology: NerveGear, a system that allows users to completely immerse themselves in a wholly realistic gaming experience. But when the game goes live, the elation of the players quickly turns to horror as they discover that, for all its amazing features, SAO is missing one of the most basic functions of any MORPG - a log-out button. Now trapped in the virtual world of Aincrad, their bodies held captive by NerveGear in the real world, users are issued a chilling ultimatum: conquer all one hundred floors of Aincrad to regain your freedom. But in the warped world of SAO, game over means certain death - both virtual and real.

   Exactly like the anime
If you' re buying this for the purpose of comparing the novels to the anime or to see if there's extra content in the novels, then you' re in luck. I wanted to start collecting the novels because I'm an avid reader. The second novel has a few episodes that are not in the first one. The author only intended for it to be a short story, so it is not the best written. I bought them because I wanted to start the progressive novels. I'm glad the story was kept true.

A must read for SAO Anime fans
The overall story of the show does a good job, but it misses details and key points for both Asuna and Kirito. Inner dialog, thoughts, reasonings, etc A lot of the moments from the Aincrad arcs of Season 1 make sense after reading this one. I'm going to read the rest of the books.

   Can't put it down!
My husband is a fan of SAO. He's been playing games, watching shows and movies. He urged me to get into it, but I never did. He bought the first 4 books of the series, and I couldn't resist. I' ve enjoyed the books so far. I expected more than that. Since they arrived, I have been reading them every day.

The SAO anime, in text. Good read.
It's almost word for word the entire story of the animation. There are a few little tidbits here and there that give more depth to the story, but the majority of the story was the same as in the anime. It was quick and easy to read, so I think it's a good idea. If you' re interested in a more detailed version of their time in Aincrad, you should read the Progressive series.

The light novels give you a lot more information than the other books, which can make them hard to read. It's not a bad thing, but let's see sides of the characters that aren't shown in pictures.

   Great Light Novel!!:) Highly Recommend!!:)
I am starting to like this light novel a lot. I finished the novel years ago, but I haven't read it in a long time. I am trying to finish the first Aincrad novel and have 2 more to go, but I am not done yet! My take of the SAO Novel is more in depth than the one in the anime. The words jump off the page. I will purchase the rest of the series once I finish this book. Great novel!

   Great read!
I don't know how much was changed by watching the anime first, but the characters were well done, with more in- depth look at who the people are, even if the background isn't really explored. It makes sense that there is more to learn about the characters since it is the first book in a series. It is not as dark as you might think. I didn't read the description carefully because it was a novel, which surprised me.
