If you are choosing between this and "The Tolkien Reader" I would definitely recommend you go with this book
Tales from the Perilous Realm is a great compilation of short stories, poems and essays written during various periods of his life. If you choose between this and The Tolkien reader, I would definitely recommend going with this book. The only thing you are missing is the homecoming of Beorhtnoth... and that's ok. In short, Roverandom was a charming story about a dog that runs afoul of a wizard. Farmer Giles is a fun story of an unlikely hero and a dragon. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is a wonderful collection of Middle Earth poems and stories. Niggle's leaf is very thought-provoking. Wootton Major of Smith is a great reminder to never judge a book by its cover. Lastly, the book includes the full essayspeech On Fairy-Stories if you want a view of Tolkien's mind.

   REVIEW ON PERILOUS REALM
Though it is often hard to read Tolkien stories, having a masterpiece like the Lord of The Rings inevitably in the back of your mind, I find this book refreshing and easy to get into. In particular Roverandom, which is full of childlike wonder in description. What probably takes the Lord of Rings problem... Tolkiens description of fairy tales and the use of the descriptive term The Perilous Realms for such places.

   Great for Tolkien lovers
So far, I only read the first two of the five stories in this book. I read Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings and Tolkien became my favorite author instantly. It is really neat to see different, shorter stories that he wrote. I found these fascinating ''.

   BEAUTIFULLY written - of course!
Stories range from kid-friendly to a bit scary, from funny to serious, but always with Tolkien's masterly touch with words and structure. The farm Giles of Ham is a particularly charming story for children in the 7-12 age group. Leaf of Wooton Major is a lot more serious, as is Smith of Wooton Major, but their grace and sweetness make them perfect for thoughtful adults.

   A precious collection
This is an indispensable addition to any Tolkien fan collection! “Roverandom ” is an excellent story. The adventures of Tom Bombadil is a wonderful collection of poems written or compiled by Bill Bow or Sam Gamgee, further deepening the lore and the world building of the Lord of the Rings and related stories.

Artwork Alone is Worth the Price
Delightful stories, especially from Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wooton Major and Leaf by Niggle. This book was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and did a great job with printing, ink, leading, type, paper, everything. His pencil drawings were exceptional and I must look for other books he has illustrated. I almost gave this book 4 stars because I did not really enjoy Tolkien's discussion on Fairy Stories. But I 'd rather read Tolkien's fairy stories than reading his opinions on fairy stories. I am a Hobbit fan and will read the Tolkien and Ring Trilogy for the fourth time.
