Inspired me to become a volunteer jail librarian
Funny, moving, profound book. "We should stand in awe of what the poor have to carry, rather than stand in judgment of how they carry it."
The absolute opposite of the all too dominant fear-mongering, joyless, judgmental voices claiming to speak for Christianity today. His explanation that the literal meaning of the word translated as "repentance" is "to go behind the mind we have" changed my way of thinking - we're not called on to wallow in guilt and self-flagellation (much less impose them on others), but to grow in our ability to see one another's worth and to care for one another's pain. Reading this book and watching the documentary on his work (I think it's called G-Dog) opens a window on both the immensity of suffering that fuels so much dysfunction and crime in our country - and also on the incredible joy and love the most wounded people can offer one another. Like Jane Addams, Boyle shows what real solidarity with the poor actually looks like. Highly recommend for anyone who needs both hope and a practical, approachable model to loving our neighbors as ourselves.

I got whip-lash from reading this book!!
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I knew that I should have ordered extras to loangiver!! I knew that I should have ordered extras to loan! A pastor friend recommended it to me!!! It is a whiplash book!!! One minute you're fighting loudly, next minute you're laughing out of tears! Father G's combines so much humor, yet never inappropriate to balance the shear heaviness of the topic. He shares the stories of the homeboys and homegirls that he ministers to and LOVES and can have you laughing out loud in so many places, especially after a homeboy turns his life around! Those stories are the hardest to read as their hearts break for the mothers, Father G and all those who love youth as Christ loves them! Keep Tissues nearby!

   Heart touching and funny
Greg Boyle spent his life working among the street gangs of L.A. All of them. And he loves them enough to offer a way out of gang life without coercion that works for those who accept the invitation. On hearing about his diagnosis of leukemia, one of his homies calls him from jail to ask what's this about leukemia. Well, the doctor says my white cell count is high. H-E-L-O! Of course, your high count is white! YOU ARE WHITE!! And Greg writes : From now on, I get only my second opinions from jail. Two favors do your heart : The book is read by. It is passed to someone else.

Christ is still at work in America, in some places you would never guess.
Tattoos on the Heart is a book you will not put down, the human side of this true to life story of the young men and women who end up in the gangs of LA will bring you tears and at the same time you will see Christ in the very center of their everyday life with Father Boyle. This book will share the story of all our lives we want to loved, we want to be wanted, we want to provide for those we love. I would encourage anyone to pick up this book and read it, it will change your life and how you look at the lives of those who find themselves in the daily war of gang life.

Wasn’t the most interesting book. It was just a list of short stories that helped mold someone into learning to love everyone.
If you want to share a short story on a dark night, you should be pretty good. That was what I found most to stick. Be kind always because you don 't know what goes through others.

   Important read
I read this book several times, along with Greg Boyle's other book, Barking to the Choir. They are funny, heart-breaking, and inspiring. I purchased many copies of these books and offered them as gifts. What G Boyle has accomplished is social and is a blue print for resolving amazing issues of our times. I highly recommend '' this book.

Father Greg Boyle and Homeboy Industries
Boyle's devotion to his church and his homies is amazing. Reading his stories about helping poor young people truly shows the nature of our Holy Father, helping the poor. I am grateful for all that Father Boyle has done in his community and for what this book taught me.

I was reminded that compassion is necessary and helping fellow men and women is good
I found this book deeply inspiring as a struggling Catholic. I was reminded that compassion is good and helping fellow men and women is necessary, but not the best. We can continue on our path to help others and this is good, but until we allow ourselves to be filled with them, that is when their soul is filled. Ours will also be bi-product and as a product of itself, so will ours. Instead of a handout, bring them to the restaurant and share a table. This is kinship this is. The power to fill their soul with the dignity that was lost when they were expelled by our society. I was raised in this area of Los Angeles and am a parishioner of the Dolores Mission Church. If it had not been for the Church's commitment to social justice, I do not think I would remain a Catholic today. My parents took the 3rd Friday of each month to serve and make dinners to the men who slept in the church. This book taught me that this is the hallway leading to the Grand Ballroom. Ballroom Boy is that Ballroom Grand! Boy is that Ballroom Grand!

   A recommended read, for sure
A great collection of stories and thoughtful reflections. It is a little more social gospel than a clear layout of biblical principles with scripture references, but I found the whole thing very thought-provoking and a great examination of the effects of shame on a person and society.

I fell more deeply in love with members of humanity
This book, though not new, was broken to me every few pages, My Heart was new... This happened over and over. I fell more deeply in love with members of humanity, who are labeled on the edge, throw aways and not like me. Thank Father G. and the Homies for breaking my heart over and over again.
