Winner of the Lincoln Prize
Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Abraham Lincoln's political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires. It was this capacity that enabled Lincoln as president to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to the task of preserving the Union and winning the war. First:
Doris and James McCullough are my 2 favorite writers (and James Mitchener w/ Historical Fiction) in Historical topics and books! (This book was used as the basis for the movie "LINCOLN".) It has been a few years since reading this book, but it was fabulous on all the Cabinet Lincoln had who were his political rivals in the 1860 election. ALL of the guys had something to add to his office, but the Sec of State, and the War Secretary were to me the greatest. They informed Abe on the strategies of the War since we were now in the "WAR BETWEEN THE STATES". Yes, a couple were replaced for not caring for their office, as well. This will reflect on what or should have been accomplished in the CW, but Johnson, who replaced Lincoln after the assassinate did NOT do what I feel he could have done to better re-unite the Sothern states with the Yankees! (Johnson was not caring person). You will have missed out on a LOT of information. Try this, and YOU will wonder what took you so long to ever read this! Do yourself a favour! READ this, and give to another historical-minded person, also! READ THIS NOW!! You will notttt regrat this!~! JIM PS: Doris Kerns Goodwin is BEYOND a 5 STAR author!! |
