Book Overview

Telling the Truth is for the preacher who must pull the little cord that turns on the lectern light, must look out over the people and the silence, must begin to speak of a truth beyond telling. It is for the woman who wants to understand how people believe what they cheerfully acknowledge is a tragic, comic fairy tale. It is for anyone who believes that faith, like art, can hold a special mirror to human experience.

This book confirmed deep musings and convictions I have held for years and has provided me with fodder for years of thought and consideration. It already seems to have provided the language for these deep and vague, but foundational convictions. The book is well written, poetic... a gem. Its main point seems to be that we should tell the TRUTH, which is never so simple or neatly bundled, but wrought with our complex and difficult and sometimes seemingly contradictory experiences that the gospel truth is ALL of these terrible tragedy, absurd comedy, incredible fairy tales.

   Soothes the soul
I wish that every preacher would read and absorb this book completely. It is good medicine for the evangelical heart, which is troubled by the tone of voice from many a pulpit. Words of Grace, Empathy and Understanding that Surprise, delight and encourage without sacrificing sound doctrine. Soren Keirkegaard noted an irony in his own era. There may be one or two real poets born to any generation, but anyone can become a preacher by simply passing a test. More than a minister, Fredrick Buechner is. He is a poet of this generation, who is gifted with a perspective that not only does what a poet teaches, but also teaches how to see it in ways that only a poet can see. I view him as one of my fathers in faith, and his writings have had a large role in preserving my own faith. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and this book is a great place to start.

   Powerful writing
Buechner is an gifted writer and an insightful thinker and provides a lot of food for thought about what preached the gospel should and shouldn 't be. Any preacher or aspiring preacher requires important reading for any pastor.
