Book Overview

An artist and activist committed to the empowerment of women and girls has created a gorgeous illustrated volume, blending watercolor and short biography to showcase the contributions of more than fifty influential female leaders whose words and actions are a passionate call to arms.

Distraught by the results of the 2016 election and the realization that the nation was not ready for its first female president, Kimothy Joy found herself poring over the biographies of brave women throughout history--those who persisted in the face of daunting circumstances--to learn from their experiences.

Turning to art, Joy channeled her feelings to the canvas, bringing these strong women to life in bold watercolor portraits surrounded by inspirational hand-lettered quotes. With each creation, Joy found catharsis and hope. She shared her watercolors with her online community and encouraged everyone to raise their own voices and recharge for the battles ahead.

Now, in this beautiful gift book, Joy has gathered her stunning illustrations and quotes and paired them with surprising, illuminating biographies of her subjects to inspire women of all ages, races, and backgrounds. That's What She Said honors a powerful and diverse group of over fifty women--from Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, and Virginia Woolf to Sojourner Truth, Malala Yousafzai, and Ruth Bader Read More chevron_right

   Not Very Inspiring
I love quotes, and take great pleasure in reading them, because they are inspirational and witty. That's fine, but the quotes are so weak. Just not the humor and strength that I know from experience is out there. It was returned without incident.

Great Women - Great Quotes! & mini bio
I highly recommend this book. One page bio about each of the honorees. On the other hand, a sketch of the woman and a cutesy script of some famous line from page here. They are very quotable quotes, I must say. Some are inspirational quotes. Some are amazingly appropriate for this time and social conditions, he said. One or two witty lines could lead to a wonderful conversation. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

In her book, "The Lives of Great Women," Doris Lessin details the lives of eight legendary women. A photomontage of the original portraits by Kimothy.

Here’s to all women of the world!
It's a great read, Gillian said of the book. A must have addition to all women's libraries. Good book, too, by the way. Bought multiple as gifts and one for myself.

Author has an obvious political attitude.
The girl was looking for a present for her grandmother. This has some stories that I think are worthy, but the political leaning of the author was so obvious in the summarized descriptions that I found it irritating. Yes, I'm returning it.

   GOOD BOOK FOR YOUNG LADIES
A wonderful book with lovely pictures of the women who are quoted. Interesting bios short of each person also, Morgenthau said. A good book for girls. It is a little advanced for younger kids, since it talks about sexual orientation in some orientation bios.

Great minds, great women and stimulating thoughts.
From ancient Egypt to present-day America, these are the thoughts of influential women from a variety of fields. It is, without a doubt, one of the best books a book can do. Turn the TV on, the radio and shut down the computer. The fifth and final volume of the "Harry Potter" series, "The Deathly Hallows Part 2."

   Loved it!
The book is a must-have for anyone who has a passion for history and inspiration. Young readers, beware: There is no such thing as a free book. A quick read, Michael.

Great book! Has a little bio on each woman ...
A great book, Gillian. The book has a little bio on each woman and how they made an impact, and the illustrations are really nice, too.

   Art and word inspiration!!
I'm also very excited to have my own book of Kimothys Joy illustrations. Loved her work for a while, said Blair. It reminds us that we are all created by so many beautiful and wise souls. This book specifically has "wise words" from inspirational women, it says, and includes a blank space for an exceptional woman to add to your personal life. I love the new look of the magazine. My boys love it, and I'm quoting from it. I've gifted it to friends and daughters as well as these words lift every woman's journey. A beautiful and inspiring work of art.
