Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

The dramatic, pulse-pounding story of Harry Truman's first four months in office, when this unlikely president had to take on Germany, Japan, Stalin, and the atomic bomb, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Heroes are often defined as ordinary characters who get thrust into extraordinary circumstances, and through courage and a dash of luck, cement their place in history. Chosen as FDR's fourth term Vice President for his well-praised work ethic, good judgment, and lack of enemies, Harry S. Truman--a Midwesterner who had no college degree and had never had the money to buy his own home--was the prototypical ordinary man. That is, until he was shockingly thrust in over his head after FDR's sudden death. During the climactic months of the Second World War, Truman had to play judge and jury, pulling America to the forefront of the global stage. The first four months of Truman's administration saw the founding of the United Nations, the fall of Berlin, victory at Okinawa, firebombings of Tokyo, the first atomic explosion, the Nazi surrender, the liberation of concentration camps, the mass starvation of Europe, the Potsdam Conference, the controversial decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the surrender of Imperial Japan, and finally, the end of World War I and the Read More chevron_right

Appropriate gift for college-age grandson? Perfect!
For the record, Microsoft issued this statement: "We strongly disagree with the position taken by the Commission." Everyone did love the GIVE'EM HELL persona, especially the no-holds-barred letter he wrote to the reporter who dared to pan Margaret's singing. Must add however, that my strict Republican father came back from a trip to Europe in the mid-sixties, raving about the wonderful statue of HST he'd seen.

A window on the world in the mid twentieth century
Makes for a fast and often exciting reading. Yes, I think he's a good candidate for your history library. We also see that a good leader can do in extraordinary circumstances what a bullet can do in ordinary circumstances.

   Excellent Book
What a great book, said Frey. I have a new profound respect for Harry S. Truman and his presidency. To come from nothing and achieve the status of President of the United States is truly remarkable.

   Very insightful
If you like history, I would recommend this book. I felt this was a retelling of president Truman's time in office while he is not regarded as a very influential president, Mr. Shelby said. Now I understand how he got into office and the burdens he carried _ a book was a bit mundane for me at certain times, but it did add to my curiosity of Harry S Truman.

Great read about a great President considering how he was thrown into a job he didn't want.
This was an excellent bio-of-a-four-month period in Truman's presidency. Another example, it seems, of America's ability to produce the right man for the job at the right time. Very well written, well researched and a pleasure to read.

Compacts a lot of information in only 360 pages
The book is filled with a lot of previously unpublicized information about the 39th president, including his first four months in office. So many important things happened during that brief period of time, and Truman's ability to handle these extraordinary events was unparalleled. The book is well written and very readable, said Dr. Chester Floyd, director of the Naval Academy's Center for Naval Research. A very good piece of work, Gillian.

Great picture of a truly accidental President to rose to the occasion
Wonderful to read, said Barbara Comstock, co-chair of the inquiry. A great personal picture of a modestly qualified person who rose to the occasion and turned into a great President, Mr. Reagan said. The response was extremely positive, said Dr. Goin.

   What a GREAT read!
A great writer, Robert Heinwall said. I've read all the books except for this one.

   Riveting!
In one word, Microsoft's new product promises to deliver. From the time I began reading this history until the time I finished, I could not put it down. I was only 6 years old when World War II ended and I have lived thru 14 U.S. Presidents. In his opinion, Harry S. Truman is one of the greatest presidents. He took the bull by the horns and got the job done when it needed to be done, he said. He told it like it was, and let the chips fall where they may. My kind of President was described by a very capable historian, Mr. Reagan said.

   Enjoyable, Though Not Groundbreaking
This book is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in public administration. The author has a good feel for Truman's character and the times in which he lived, Morgenthau said. It certainly deserves a place among the increasing number of books about Presidents that are part biography, but which focus on a relatively short period of time. Thus, I recommend this book to Presidential enthusiasts of history, though I wouldn't recommend it as the only book of Truman that someone should read.
