Book Overview

In 1936, the Heritage Press, a publisher of fine editions, commissioned Norman Rockwell to illustrate Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer; four years later, they asked him to illustrate The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well. For each book, Rockwell created eight full-color paintings and numerous pen-and-ink drawings, the product of extensive on-the-ground research in Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. Famously, Rockwell even tried to buy some Hannibal residents' old clothes, to dress his models in.

For years, the Rockwell editions of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have been unavailable in stores. Now, Abbeville Press is proud to reissue them as a handsome new clothbound set. The color plates are reproduced from new photography of Rockwell's original paintings, the typesetting has been done anew to a high standard, and new introductions--illustrated with Rockwell's rarely seen preliminary sketches--examine this unique encounter between two legendary chroniclers of America.

Publisher's note: These volumes present Mark Twain's text unabridged and unedited, as it appeared in the original American editions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).

   Beautiful Copy, Poor Spine Ink
I got around to reading it about two weeks after it arrived, only to realize that I had read too many books. It's just that when you read it in the same chair and return it to the same basket next to chair, it creates a lot of the green on the spine. It's pretty disappointing for the price.

   Just what I expected
A wonderful set of books. I got them for my grandson because he attends school without a teacher. His wife, Brandi, was born in Hannibal, Mo. We're asphyxiating, caveman. I have a very special memory of that night.

Beautiful set, a Classic American book illustrated by a Classic American artist.
This is a beautiful edition of these two great novels. He also wrote "Great American Novelists" and "The Mark Twain Diaries." This book is highly recommended by book lovers, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

   Best set I have seen.
Brand new this season, high quality gifts. Binding is a wonderful material. Brand new York: H. Pauley, Cloth covers. And, of course, Rockwell's illustrations are well done. The set is a quality present. It was a surprise, I thought, because I bought another for a present.

A Norman Rockwell and Mark Twain classic
I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm not your average kid book writer. The illustrations are the best money can buy, they are. Nobody has done illustrations quite like Norman Rockwell.

Good Deal on a Pair of Classics
They look so nice on the shelf, I will enjoy reading them. Just about everything about this book is good, except for the price.
