Book Overview

Sleuthing duo Emily and James tackle their most challenging mystery yet set on the haunting Alcatraz Island in Book 3 of the New York Times-bestselling, middle-grade Book Scavenger series

Legendary literary game-maker Garrison Griswold is back in action--this time with Unlock the Rock. For his latest game, Griswold has partnered with the famous--and famously reclusive--mystery writer Errol Roy to plan an epic escape room challenge on Alcatraz Island.

Emily and James are eager to participate, but the wave of fame they are riding from their recent book-hunting adventures makes them a target. Threatening notes, missing items, and an accident that might not have been an accident have the duo worried that someone is trying to get them out of the game at any cost.

When Emily's brother is caught red-handed and blamed for all the wrong doings, Emily is certain Matthew is being framed. With Matthew's record on the line, Emily and James can't afford to leave this mystery uncracked.

   A puzzle competition at Alcatraz
A new competition has been held, one of which was announced in Alcatraz. To qualify, each competitor must successfully complete an online puzzle. While James makes it easily, Emily struggles and is worried enough that she looks for a Plan B in finding a golden ticket to the game. The two are also concerned that someone may be trying to keep them out of the competition when they receive threatening letters. But the real games begin when the gang makes it to Alcatraz, where there seem to be multiple games in progress and not all related to the official game. As usual, the book is full of puzzles that the reader can solve along with the characters.
   Not what we expected.
Didn 't get beyond the first few pages. My 8 year old got bored quickly : it wasn 't what he expected. It could be better after the first few pages... maybe one day we find out! Nevertheless, it is best to read the description first, as the title does not describe the book well.
   Great addition to the series
Greatly enjoyed by the 10-year-old granddaughter since she had read the previous two books. It could be difficult to follow the story without the previous knowledge of the first two.
I've read all of the Book Scavenger Series.
I chose this rating because this book seems so real. Emily, James and all the other characters feel so real to me. They live in me, like how Errol Roy's books lived in the people who read them. I enjoy a great mystery and this is a good one. Happy reading! .
   Poorly made book copy
We love Book Scavengers and was very excited to receive this third book in the series for my son, but was sooooo disappointed when I opened the box. The edges of the pages look like they were torn instead of cut, and when you close the book the pages are wavey like they had all gotten wet and then dried, and the cover was torn as well. We love book scavengers again, but will return this book for a decently made copy.
   Good Read
This series I love. The characters are well developed and as usual it is an interesting themeplot.
   A great read!
The puzzles and setting shocked me, with some riveting surprises throughout the book and its ending. This book kept me awake at night reading it and once I started it, I couldn t put it down.
Bertman is continuing the same quality in this the 3rd ...
Bertman continues in this 3rd installment with the same quality as in the 1st installment of the book's Scavenger novel. Appropriate for the upper elementary and middle school. I was inspired by this series to add a Libro-Cache to the activities my students do in the library.
