The definitive book on animation, from the Academy Award-winning animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Animation is one of the hottest areas of filmmaking today--and the master animator who bridges the old generation and the new is Richard Williams. During his fifty years in the business, Williams has been one of the true innovators, winning three Academy Awards and serving as the link between Disney's golden age of animation by hand and the new computer animation exemplified by Toy Story. Perhaps even more important, though, has been his dedication in passing along his knowledge to a new generation of animators so that they in turn could push the medium in new directions. In this book, based on his sold-out master classes in the United States and across Europe, Williams provides the underlying principles of animation that every animator--from beginner to expert, classic animator to computer animation whiz --needs. Urging his readers to invent but be believable, he illustrates his points with hundreds of drawings, distilling the secrets of the masters into a working system in order to create a book that will become the standard work on all forms of animation for professionals, students, and fans.It takes about 7 Hours and 17 minutes on average for a reader to read The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.
The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators is 392 pages long.
best animation book ever.

This is an amazing book!!! I cannot see why anyone would give this book less than five. For the people out there who have never tried to do an animation or find it very difficult, and if they bought this book, they would be able to do it instantly with minimal effort. I'm sorry to say that the answer is no. Animation is a difficult yet extremely underrated skill that most people assumes to be easy. This book helps you with some of the steps to make a lot of the common animations you may encounter. It is more of a tool or a reference guide to help you during the animation process. It will not do the work for you. I even thought I wish it would even though I wished it would.

Great Book!

I am currently in media arts and animation and bought this book to help me understand the whole process. It is very informative and easy to understand. I love illustrations because I not only like visual instruction, but I am also a written learner. The instructions were well written and took the beginner in animation,Excellent book if you are considering this field or even if you just want to learn good animation.

Extremely graphic
Derived From Web , Jan 5, 2022
This book is a constantly mentioned staple of so many YouTubers who are animators. What is particularly unfortunate about it is that children are aspiring to these careers, parents grab books like this for reference materials for their budding animator, only to open it to extremely graphic material with lots of nudes mixed with comical animations. It's so disappointing. With the purchase of this book, future budding animators are exposed to what amounts to pornography. We will return it and look for something for the craft and actual goals of future animators. What an extremely disappointing purchase.

Amazing depth, revealing all the secrets, wisdom mixed with wit. Fascinating
Derived From Web , Sep 1, 2021
I teach figure drawing at the university and was looking for clarity on how an animator thinks really. I found a treasure trove of history, personal narratives from the artist's soul, mixed with step by step instructions on how it all worked. This guy is absolutely amazing. I could not put this down ''. If you are really focused on learning how to move the figure and analyze movement, this is for you. If you are new at this, take the first drawing and figure drawing first if you are new. This is not a quick 'easy'book for beginners, but a more seasoned artist. What a great gift to share a lifetime of wisdom with others.

Good book for fans and animators alike!
Derived From Web , May 4, 2021
Fantastic Book '', I love to see the world of animation behind the scenes. The stories that Richard Williams has to tell are all interesting and the advice he has is solid. I was surprised by some One Star reviews that stated that the book was full of smut or that Williams keeps promoting art college, and that this book is only useful for hand animation. This book is a wonderful addition to any bookshelf of real fans and is a treasure for any animated animator.

Bad delivery for a great book.
Derived From Web , Jun 30, 2020
I give this book five stars, as I am already familiar with it from my local library, and know that the information is valuable. I needed a copy for myself, now that I've become serious about animating, I've got a copy for myself. I think that most will enjoy this book and find it as valuable as I do - I highly recommend it. I don 't understand why my book was shipped with a heavy object even when I chose not to consolidate my orders in bulk packaging, I RIP Richard Williams 1933-2019 The Bad '' I don 't understand why my book was shipped with a heavy-ish object, even when I chose not to consolidate my orders to save on packaging. I think that all books in literature mailers must be shipped individually. It drives me crazy when a book arrives damaged.

In between motions

i kept this short part of this book is not where the 3D shines. But instead the frame by frame animations, steps where add the extra movement to make this transition as smooth as realflow as possible.

Wrong Expectation on My Part
Derived From Web , Aug 1, 2019
I was hoping that this book was a comprehensive guide to animating, but my idea of comprehensive was wrong. The book started by telling the reader that you need to know how to draw, and the book is not teaching you how to draw. It is also a bit too conversational for me. At times, I just hoped that he would cut to chase and lay the principles and exercises. I know that some people appreciated the anecdotes and stories in this book, but it is just odd to me, since I expected this book to be more of a manual than advertised. Some of his advice also sounds more like a personal choice than strict rules. I did not finish reading the book, so take my word with a grain of salt.

I should have looked at the lower reviews
Derived From Web , Mar 15, 2019
I was expecting not what I was getting. I saw methods for computers and games in the description, but I didn't see anything to indicate that is so. Also not suitable for children. I saw a lot of high reviews of people giving it to their sons, but there is no way I give this to my 12 year old step son. I posted a few pictures, but not all. There are literally 4 pages of an old woman walking with her boobs bouncing in whichever direction. WTF? WTF? ! !
