This Description may be from another edition of this product.

It's 1952 and the Scott family has just moved from Los Angeles to London. Here, fourteen-year-old Janie meets a mysterious apothecary and his son, Benjamin Burrows - a fascinating boy who's not afraid to stand up to authority and dreams of becoming a spy. When Benjamin's father is kidnapped, Janie and Benjamin must uncover the secrets of the apothecary's sacred book, the Pharmacopoeia, in order to find him, all while keeping it out of the hands of their enemies - Russian spies in possession of nuclear weapons. Discovering and testing potions they never believed could exist, Janie and Benjamin embark on a dangerous race to save the apothecary and prevent impending disaster.
Together with Ian Schoenherr's breathtaking illustrations, this is a truly stunning package from cover to cover. Contains a teaser chapter of the sequel, The Apprentices.

   cute story
I liked the plot and the characters, it was all good. '' Nothing terribly memorable, but the illustrations were also great and I would recommend this to adult readers and adults with a child heart. The only thing was that the characters were 12ish based on their thoughts and actions, until they kissed and then I was surprised until I recalled that they were supposed to be older. Oh well... That was a joke. Beautiful to have a male protagonist that boys will probably not mind reading about.

   Wonderful!!!
I was afraid that it would be extremely scary and strange, but decided to get it anyway. Although it did have magicalfantasy parts, it also had action, adventure and spine tingling suspense. I do not want to give the book away, but if you do not enjoy fiction and fantasy, you should not get this book. Instead of an ordinary apothecary, the apothecary in the book performs spells, the change of the material. But the author combined fantasy and real-life events in a very interesting and engaging way. The book was written extremely well. Well done Meloy Maile!!!!!! -D -

   A REAL PAGE TURNER
I hated to have it ended, as I enjoyed the characters so much. Read it and you will see what I mean. Joan is a journalist from Dublin, France.

11 year old girl's favorite book
She read this 3 times in a few months because it really caught her attention. I, mom, read it after a well-written story, kid heroes you can identify with, the story line is a combination of historical novel and magical fantasy.

Its a really good book but the ending is not so great
My 11 year old son says, it's a really good book, but the ending is not quite great. If you leave before the ending, it is fantastic, but the ending changes the feel of the whole book. It is disappointing that the first character is not as good as you thought. Although its being said that it is happening for the best of the main character.
