Book Overview

This large-format, high-page-count monograph is the definitive tome on the work of the prolific Provensen husband-and-wife team. The book includes many never-before-seen sketches and development work for many of their books; exquisite drawings from their extensive travel journals; and many personal paintings, illustrations, photographs, and artifacts.

The Art of Alice and Martin Provensen is the first-ever monograph on this beloved mid-century husband-and-wife illustration team. This award-winning pair created more than 40 beloved children's books over the span of seven decades, many of which appeared on the New York Times Best Illustrated Books of the Year lists. From early favorites for Golden Books such as The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown, 1949, to their Caldecott-winning title The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot, 1983, the Provensens' books inspired generations of young readers. This beautiful volume showcases hundreds of their well-known illustrations, their signature design for Kellogg's Tony the Tiger mascot, 1952, as well as many never-before-seen paintings, ideations, travel sketchbooks, and ephemera. The Provensens' colorful, inimitable artwork is a treasure trove for designers, illustrators, literary historians, and all who cherish classic children's books.

   Gorgeous!
Wow, what a beautiful book! I absolutely loved seeing the different styles of Alice's Martin's work over the years. The colors were interesting and the variation in style was incredibly stunning. Everything is political art from cookbooks. I also loved reading so many stories from the family life. This would make such a beautiful gift for anyone who is a lover of Alice's Martin Provensen's art or in general any art or illustration lover. She loved it!

   a lovely book
This title includes a long conversation with the daughter of the illustrators, two of their speeches, one of which was a Caldecott Medal acceptance, an introduction and forward, photos of the couple and... the illustrations. These go from 1951 for A Child's Garden of Verses all the way to Klondike Gold in 2005. The illustrations made by this couple are whimsical and often engaging. They often brought smiles on my face. This book is published on 01 March 2022.

"New" product arrived with a broken spine.
This was listed as new, but when the package arrived the rear cover hinge was clearly damaged and loose. Hard to tell if the damage occurred in transit because the packing box had no material to prevent the item from bouncing or impacting other surfaces. The endpaper on the rear cover hinge, however, looks worn, which indicates that damage had already existed. It is a disappointment because the interior is gorgeous. This book is an incredible archive of Provensen's work. Beware just of this possibility.

   Beautiful illustrations
For me, this was an unusual book. It is a biography, as well as a children's book and an art book. I had never heard the famous couple. It was so an unexpected delight. Very interesting and very well traveled. 4 stars :

Lovely but print is way too small
Beautiful book for those of us who remember our childhood provensen books and read them to our own children or children we have taught. I read her Iliad and Odyssey many times and remembered even the Greek alphabet at the back. However, I am the age where I can not read such a minute typography, possibly as small as 7 or 8 point type. My God '' returns the book regretfully. I am certain that many, many people will have the same complaint. The shame is real.

   Book illustrations
This beautiful book, showing the illustrations of Alice and Martin Provensen, shows the progression of their style and experimental drawings over the years. Primarily children's book illustrators expanded the two artists'work into magazines and other venues. And art is delightful in every case! --A wonderful gift book for all ages.

   Beautiful!
I love that it is full of images, I dislike art books that have more words than pictures - this book has comparatively very few words. The whimsical styles are so artistic.
