Hosts of all kinds, this is a must-read --Chris Anderson, owner and curator of TED

From the host of the New York Times podcast Together Apart, an exciting new approach to how we gather that will transform the ways we spend our time together--at home, at work, in our communities, and beyond.

In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive--which they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play.

Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings--conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp--and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience.

The result is a book that's both journey and guide, full of exciting ideas with real-world applications. The Art of Gathering will forever alter the way you look at your next meeting, industry conference, dinner party, and backyard barbecue--and how you host and attend them.

   It's About Time
The Art of Gathering is written by a woman. I get a call from someone that says, "Hey, I've got this group, and we need to." From conferences to birthday parties, I've become the go-to person my friends and colleagues call for help. I had to learn the hard way from the book. All gatherings come with expectations. Connection isn't done on its own. The kind of connections you want to create need to be designed. Every choice is made easier when the purpose of the gathering becomes a decision filter.

Great ideas for business gatherings (mostly)
I read the book to get ready for the family reunion. Not quite on target. There are good ideas for meetings.

   Fabulous book! Treat yourself.
A wonderful guide to help us make our gatherings more productive and fulfilling. The title says all about the Art of Gathering. It will forever change the way you look at meetings. I gave multiple copies of the book to friends and family after reading it. They also liked it.

   Not worth it
I liked the artwork on the cover and gave this one star. The author comes off as detached and pretentious. The entire book is about her. Don't waste money or time.

   Worth reading
I learned a few things from this book. I would recommend this book to my friends, but only with a caveat and a warning, because I found it hard to relate to the author, who has a tendency to be braggadocious. Many of the anecdotes feel like they were included to let the reader know that the author is well connected, and the book at times reads more like a "who's-who" for the author's social circle rather than a guide for helping others.

for people that make things happen
I learned about this book while volunteering for a charity. If you don't throw parties, organize events, gather friends for costume parties, or are not interested in what makes these things tick, this may not be the book for you. This book is a total game-changer for me because I do all of these things with my wife. Wow! The book is full of wisdom about how to be a good host, and how to find meaningful themes and organizing principals no matter the scope. I don't agree that the book is focused on business gatherings, but it will help you understand why some gatherings are good and others are bad. Thank you for this book, you have made life more interesting. David.

Putting into words what I've always felt
I've gathered people for years with the help of Priya. Through hundreds of interviews, her case by case approach adds so much insight and value to the simplest of hosting responsibilities. I'll use this book for a long time. Thank you for that!
