Book Overview

When it was first published in 1998, The Backpacker's Field Manual set the standard for comprehensive backpacking books. Now exhaustively updated to offer a more complete view of backpacking today, it covers the latest developments in gear--such as Global Positioning Systems and ultralight hiking equipment--first aid, and Leave No Trace comping, and includes a chapter devoted to outdoor leadership resources and basics. Beginners and experienced hikers alike will find this book indispensable for trip planning strategies and also as a quick reference on the trail for:

BACKCOUNTRY SKILS--how to forecast the weather, identify trees, bear-proof your campsite, wrap an injured ankle, and more--illustrated with more than 100 line drawings.

TRICKS OF THE TRAIL--time-tested practical lessons learned along the way

GOING ULTRALIGHT--downsizing suggestions for those who want to lighten up

Every traveler knows that space in a backpack is limited, so on your next trip, carry the only guide you'll ever need--this one--and take to the great outdoors with confidence.

   Overall great!
This is a beautiful book as a reference. The author touches base on seemingly everything, but nothing too deep in depth. For beginners, it is very useful and is small enough to carry without feeling like it takes up space.

   Great Info!
This book is one of the basic things you should have. Of course, if you are an expert that you don 't need this book well, maybe you do. I'm a somewhat newbie and I learned so much new stuff, especially things I did wrong. I gave it to my daughter and my son-in-law to read.

   Very Helpful
Here is lots of good info in depth : However, would have liked a little more orienteering and just a group dynamic lecture.

   Book Review
For the past year, I was interested in hiking and backpacking, and I have read a few books on this topic. This book is very detail-oriented and informative. I am thoroughly enjoying the expertise of this knowledgeable author.

   Great book!
It is the correct size to be a manual backpacker. I can say it has good information and tips. This will be a good start next to any other Lonely Planet guidebook. I gave it to a new traveller as a present and he finds it already exciting.

good, useful, but read it before the field
A little too late to use it in the field as a guide.

TONS of Helpful INformation esp. First Aid
Very detailed and dry from a man who lives it clearly. I got much more useful information as a backpacker myself.

   Great info, very complete.
In this book there is a lot of great information. Purchased for my son as I am introducing him to backpacking and this has everything he should know to stay safe and have fun. Was a great refresher for me, as I have not backpacked in over a decade. Information is organized in a way that makes this a good book to read or reference from cover to cover. Has things that I would have forgotten to mention for sure.

   Excellent Beginner's Resource
As a first hiker, I wanted to make sure I was properly informed about hiking and backpacking in the field, and found this not only informative, but also opened my curiosity about other aspects of the outdoors, such as reading maps, predicting the weather and identifying plants and animals. It is not geared for the bushcrafting survivalist, but it will help you to walk with the right gear on the trail. This is a good resource and anyone looking for a prime field guide to get started with, I highly recommend this book.
