Courage and a heart for adventure drive twelve-year-old shepherd boy Aidan Errolson. When the bark of the bog owl echoes from the forest across his father's well-tended pastures, Aidan dreams of wild places still untamed and quests not yet pursued.
Aidan's life changes forever on the day Bayard the Truthspeaker arrives at Longleaf with an astonishing pronouncement: it is Aidan's destiny to be the Wilderking, who will ascend to the throne from Corenwald's wildest places. Only the Wilderking can balance his people's civilizing impulses with the wildness that gives Corenwald its vitality. But not just yet. Many trials and adventures will shape the shaggy-headed shepherd boy into the man who can bring the kingdom back to its former glory.

Dream Dragons, Wizards and Talking Animals, right? Be Belong to the Wrong! In the bark of the Bog Owl, readers are introduced to Corenwald, a land of swamps, gators and Feechiefolk. This main character Aidan will appeal to anyone who loves exploring undiscovered lands, fighting imaginary enemies and getting dirty. It is a rare fantasy book that can interest people who would prefer to be outside. This is that kind of book.

A Fresh Retelling
Derived From Web , May 18, 2022
The Bark of the Bog Owl is a fun book with funny characters. A retelling of the biblical story of David, it manages to capture the heart of the story while introducing new and funny characters. Since many readers already know David's story, Rogers had to work harder to create a world that was both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Though the outline remains the same, new events and a new setting put this story on a solid foundation of its own. I highly recommend this story for any junior high or late elementary student--and anyone who likes to read lighthearted stories with truth at the core.

The book was ok.
Derived From Web , May 18, 2022
The story was pretty good, though a bit difficult to get into at the first. It is essentially a David and Goliath story in a different setting. A story junior and junior higher will enjoy and is definitely clean, moral and allows God to receive all glory.

Excited to read aloud with my family
Derived From Web , May 18, 2022
Our son is only 13-months old, but as I began reading the first book of the Wilderking Trilogy, I became more and more excited to read this book to him one day. The Bark of Bog Owl is a pleasant adult read, but nonetheless quick and easy to follow. I loved encountering each new character and discovering the swampy, woodey world of the Feechiefolk and holding my breath through the limestone caves. Our hero, Corenwald, is motivated by his love of duty to God, our King and Aidan to do great things for him... such chivalrous concepts are exciting for children. The Bark of the Bog owl is an adventure with great heart, especially from the relationship between Aidan and his heroic father and Aidan and his unlikely friend, Feechie. I look forward to reading the next two books and eventually sharing the trilogy aloud as a family.

I did not realize that this was a home-based book at first, so it was kind of fun to rediscover David and Goliath as I went.

Kept my kids engaged!
Derived From Web , Feb 15, 2022
I read it aloud to my children and we all really enjoyed the story and looked forward to reading more of Aidan's story each day. The main character is a typical kid, but also shows virtues like courage, perseverance, loyalty and friendship. We look forward to reading the next installment in the series!

Love it!

Satisfying reading, even for a grownup D. The world is well described, the action exciting and fast paced. Jonathan Rodgers's first book, and I am pretty sure that I blaze through the rest of the trilogy, even though it is meant for younger readers.

Great series for adventure-lovers
Derived From Web , Jan 12, 2021
My son had read the Wingfeather series by Peterson and the Green Ember series by S.D. Smith loved them and absolutely loved them. He begged me to try to find another similar series into which he could dive. He was done in less than 2 weeks with all 3. For reference, he is a 5th grader. So glad we found them!

I love the way the author added an old story and took his own twist without taking anything away from the original feel.
