Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In this groundbreaking book, Dan Buettner reveals how to transform your health using smart eating and lifestyle habits gleaned from new research on the diets, eating habits, and lifestyle practices of the communities he's identified as Blue Zones--those places with the world's longest-lived, and thus healthiest, people, including locations such as Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California.

With the audacious belief that the lifestyles of the world's Blue Zones could be adapted and replicated in towns across North America, Buettner launched the largest preventive health care project in the United States, The Blue Zones City Makeovers, which has impacted the health of millions of Americans since 2009. In The Blue Zones Solution, readers can be inspired by the specific stories of the people, foods, and routines of our healthy elders; understand the role community, family, and naturally healthy habits can play in improving our diet and health; and learn the exact foods--including the 50 superfoods of longevity and dozens of recipes adapted for Western tastes and markets--that offer delicious ways to eat your way to optimum health. Throughout the book are lifestyle recommendations, checklists, and stories to help you create your Read More chevron_right

Blue Zones Solutions Confirms My Own Intuition.
As an 81-year old widower, I had many questions. Six years ago, my wife of 25 years died. I was an exhausted couch potato barely able to leave without help, he said. Our family had lived on three continents for over six years. After a year of recovery and restoration, I was able to return to work. Doctors are astonished when my complete blood, chemical and other tests are all within the normal range, he said. He takes no medications, has no allergies and is not even an 81-milligram aspirin.

Another great follow-up to the earlier Blue Zones. If you have any interest in the book, skip to the end.

   My dad read it... whoa!!
My dad basically tunes me out about any of that stuff, so I'm vegan. He's in his 70s and keeps moving, but is not a nutrition buff. I thought he might like it because it's not pushing vegan or any other "diet." I think it's a good read for anyone, but especially someone like my dad. My mom said he read it all, marked pages, and went to the store.

While the content is interesting, there are no images
I bought this book for my mom who is very health conscious. I was disappointed to discover that it has no photos and extremely few illustrations, so the presentation is blah, it added. Like reading a book, you get bored.

Good read for those who are interested in eating well
Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food was an interesting addition to my food library. Years of research and personal experimentation have led me to a largely vegetarian diet, he said. It's not for everyone, but it has served me well. 0 3171616 3171578 It's not for everyone, but it has served me well. I'm 69 and ride my bike 60-70 miles each week, walk and run, and a blood pressure reading of 12058 is about average. It's great to be back home, said Dr. Goin.

   People, eat your beans!
This book is a great read, and appeared to be very well researched. The most interesting nugget was that all these long-lived people ate legumes, rice and whole grains in equal amounts, making them feel full and healthy. But apparently beans are the only beans people eat.
