Book Overview

. . . a primer of the heart on how to make reading magical again.
--Carol Ann Tomlinson

Donalyn Miller is a dedicated teacher who says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. In The Book Whisperer, Miller takes us inside her 6th grade classroom to reveal the secrets of her powerful but unusual instructional approach. Rejecting book reports, comprehension worksheets, and other aspects of conventional instruction, Miller embraces giving students an individual choice in what they read combined with a program for independent reading. She also focuses on building a classroom library of high-interest books, and above all on modeling appropriate and authentic reading behaviors. Her zeal for reading is infectious and inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. No matter how far behind Miller's students may be when they start out, they end up reading an average of 40 books per year, achieve high scores on standardized tests, and internalize a love for reading that lasts long after they've left her class.

Travel alongside the author as she leads her students to discover the ample rewards of reading and literature. Brought to life with Miller's passionate voice, The Book Whisperer will help teachers support students of all levels on their path to reading success.    a must read for any reading teacher
This is a great book for any reading teacher or for anyone who is a lover of books. I am a teacher and read it right before the school year begins. I am in my 9th year of teaching so that I am always looking for new ways to approach things with my students. I think that this book helped me to refresh my reading skills, how I spend my reading time.

The Book Whisper Speaks to Me
How do we teach children to read and become avid readers? Doralyn Miller drives this message home again and again. As reading teachers, we need to model reading by reading. We must teach children the intrinsic value of reading and not to teach extrinsic motivators to their love of reading. Then read her sequel, Reading In The Wild, to find further information on how to cultivate good reading habits that last a lifetime.

   Transforming
This book set the focus on reading for the sake of reading. During times of reform and testing this foundations the reader and teachers in the importance of reading and the benefit that comes from reading the act of reading and the need for independence and choice. A new look at the need for all reading classrooms and what children and students are missing after the transforming reforms.

   Teachers and administrators please read!
As a reading specialist in a title 1 position at an elementary school, I have seen too many teachers who teach reading in isolation of actual reading. Our children need to build their reading stamina through reading, not by completing reading worksheets or completing center-busy work for the majority of their day. Most of the time that students pick up a pencil in a center or during a reading group, they are practicing a skill. Think about how much time you have for daily reading on a very important basis and then decide if you need inspiration from the author of this very important book.

   Unacceptable condition
I purchased this new product through Amazon Prime. The book came extremely bent and the pages were dented. It is almost impossible to read.

   All teachers should read....
She loves her philosophy of letting kids read just about and making sure that they have time each day to do it. All of the teachers should have a copy of this!

   Finally!
Finally, a book that explains what I know in such an easy way to follow and implement in the classroom.

   Convincing
I was hoping for more instructional advice, ideas for implementing writing standards using their books, how she takes the grades, how she draws on their books to create whole class learning experiences, etc. Perhaps I had the wrong expectations for this book, as it was almost exclusively an argument with the author's personal experiences with a select number of students about having more time to read independently-selected books. Not a waste of time to read it - I did get several great ideas, I was just hoping to get more information from an instructional point.

Suggest the paper copy over the Kindle version
Although Donalyn Miller writes with high school teachers and students in mind, there are great ideas for middle school teachers and students too. Much of the book is spent on explaining the why and what on the subject of reading and I wish there was more concrete how to give guidance on implementation in high school classrooms. There are helpful figures of questions and student responses, but due to formatting issues they break in awkward places and I can 't see the text very well on the figures and illustration in the Kindle version.
