The acclaimed author of Sovietistan travels along the seemingly endless Russian border and reveals the deep and pervasive influence it has had across half the globe.
Imperial, communist or autocratic, Russia has been--and remains--a towering and intimidating neighbor. Whether it is North Korea in the Far East through the former Soviet republics in Asia and the Caucasus, or countries on the Caspian Ocean and the Black Sea. What would it be like to traverse the entirety of the Russian periphery to examine its effects on those closest to her? An astute and brilliant combination of lyric travel writing and modern history, The Border is a book about Russia without its author ever entering Russia itself. Fatland gets to the heart of what it has meant to be the neighbor of that mighty, expanding empire throughout history. As we follow Fatland on her journey, we experience the colorful, exciting, tragic and often unbelievable histories of these bordering nations along with their cultures, their people, their landscapes. Sharply observed and wholly absorbing, The Border is a surprising new way to understand a broad part our world. It takes about 9 Hours and 7 minutes on average for a reader to read The Border: A Journey Around Russia Through North Korea, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithu. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.

It is a "Merry Minuet" epic
Derived From Web , May 1, 2021
The whole world is filled with unhappy souls... you may be old enough to recall more of The Merry Minuet. It is as true today as it was when I first heard the song in the sixties. So far, we haven blown away in the USA. Many have, on the borders, Elsewhere and this is their story. This book, well worth reading, will provide more detailed information on the state of our world in parts that I and maybe you know little about. To complete your education, you may also want to view the Great Courses history of Eastern Europe or Barbarians of the Steppes on Prime and elsewhere.

One of the Best Travel Adventure Books I Have Read
Derived From Web , Mar 21, 2021
The Russian author Erika Fatland takes the reader along the immense length of the Norwegian border in this well-written and insightful travel book. Paul Theroux's writing style reminds me of the great travel writer Fatland, as she visits and comments on remote places. From North Korea to Mongolia to Armenia to the Baltic States and much in between, Fatland travels across borders both welcoming and hostile and encounters a fascinating mix of people. She also provides a useful historical background on these countries, most of them having suffered through centuries of upheaval, especially the former Soviet republics. For me, this was the perfect armchair adventure book to read during the COVID era of travel restrictions.

The Fringe of the Bear
Derived From Web , Feb 28, 2021
A nice addition to your travel book shelf. Ms. Fatland, a sensible but adventurous Norwegian in her 30s, takes the chair-bound reader on a journey that crosses Russia. Her story mixes personal history, current political events and the ancient stories of some of the many people she meets on her hard travels. This is an enjoyable book, made all the more suitable given the pandemic time of non-travel we are all now enduring. For example, the material on the Black Sea crossing helped me understand its origins and importance for the first time. In the end, a reader comes away with a renewed appreciation for the physical size of the old Soviet Union and for the many human disturbances on its borders caused by czars and their heir Stalin. And the border remains pulsating with Putin.
