Book Overview

The continuous decline of ocean shipping costs in the last 40 years is rarely credited for the growth of global trade in contemporary literature. Don't miss this amazing history.--George Stalk, Boston Consulting Group and author of Surviving the China Riptide

An excellent piece of work.--Bruce Nelson, Dartmouth College

This book is dynamite. The experts who tell you the transistor and microchips changed the world are off base. The ugly, unglamorous, little-noticed shipping container has changed the world. Without it, there would be no globalization, no Wal-Mart, maybe even no high-tech. And what looks like low-tech is in fact a breathtaking technological innovation. Marc Levinson's sparkling and authoritative story is great fun to read, but it is spectacular economic history as well.--Peter L. Bernstein, author of Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

Fascinating, informative, wonderfully historicized. This is a terrific untold story.--Nelson Lichtenstein, University of California, Santa Barbara, and editor of Wal-Mart: the Face of Twenty-First Century Capitalism

The adoption of the modern shipping container may be a close second to the Internet in the way it has changed our lives. It has made products from every corner of the world commonplace and accessible everywhere. It has dramatically Read More chevron_right

   Nerdy good
Any engineer or product designer should enjoy reading about how The Box '' came to be. It sounds much more interesting than it is. It is hard to believe that we ever used anything else.

   AN EXCELLENT BOOK
This book shows what a profound influence our humble container has had on our lives. The longshoreman disappeared from the scene. In the mid seventies, my father came back from his office with an interesting and tragic story. That day, one of the coolies unloading a ship at the Calcutta docks fell from the gangplank and slipped into the water between the ship and the cement pier. Usually a gentle current makes the ship swing gently hitting the pier and with perfect timing as the Coolie fell into the sea and crushed the ship against the Cement Pier to death. Such an event would not be possible today. When there is massive change, there are winners and losers, but the world has greatly benefitted from it.

   Pretty fascinating
With all the talk and analysis of the current situation in the South China Sea, it is helpful to study international trade to get a better understanding of what is at stake. This book provides a good starting point to understand the history of the container that brought about the increased velocity of international trade and how certain ports became hubs in commerce for billions of dollars.

Great overview of the container revolution
I can 't add much to what has already been said by other reviewers. Levinson gives a great overview of the container and the transport revolution that it has caused. A great companion to the books is Cudahy's Box Boats, which traces the transformation of steamship lines, container ships and cargo ship design more specifically.

Informative book out there on the history of Containers
Although i read far less about it before i knew this book. At times dry, at times informative, the book takes perhaps one of the most serious and only one shot at chronicling the container. The container has attracted more attention, but received less recognition in transforming the shipping industry. The book chronicles the inception and its remarkable journey into modern times. It is perhaps the most informative book on containers out there, though it is low in stats and relies heavily on versions of various industry folk.

   Great book
Hard to sum it up briefly, so all I 'll say is that it touches so many subjects that it really gets your brain firing making lots of connections you probably hadn t considered previously.

The box tells you the global market in nutshell
I am considered well read ''. This read compliments the travels of a t-shirt and millionaire next door quite nicely adds my self-knowledge to be successful in a global market place. If I did not mind manual labor, I would be a longshoreman. The powerful workers across the globe tell you that the business side of this important industry can not be underestimated. i don 't have a box why i got the book.

   Enjoyed more than expected
For an item that we rarely thought about or even noticed in our day-to-day lives, the shipping container has shaped our world. This book was entertaining and surprisingly eye-opening.

   Great read
If you like business, transportation or just a good read, this book is for you. The author did a great job in setting the scene and giving you the full picture of how the shipping container revolutionized the transportation industry.

Seemingly Boring Subject Turned into Fascinating Story
It is hard to appreciate how this boring, ubiquitous thing - the shipping container has rapidly crept into every facet of our lives. These things are relatively new, but they are everywhere. The book by Levinson shows how the container was developed, how it has spread and what it is used for. You learn about the early pioneers and the companies they spawned, some of which are still around. Just as fascinating, Levinson describes the world before the box, you 'll be surprised how different transportation was in the recent past. Here there is no moralizing ; he presents the facts in an objective way and lets you see the world as it is. Levinson comes across as genuinely interested in the subject and rubs off on the reader. This is a book I lent to friends as you've got to read it. If you are a fan of international ingenuity or the history of engineering, human commerce, shipping, etc, you will enjoy this book too.
