Four determined homeless children make a life for themselves in Padma Venkatraman's stirring middle-grade debut. Life is harsh in Chennai's teeming streets, so when runaway sisters Viji and Rukku arrive, their prospects look grim. Very quickly, eleven-year-old Viji discovers how vulnerable they are in this uncaring, dangerous world. Fortunately, the girls find shelter--and friendship--on an abandoned bridge. With two homeless boys, Muthi and Arul, the group forms a family of sorts. And while making a living scavenging the city's trash heaps is the pits, the kids find plenty to laugh about and take pride in too. After all, they are now the bosses of themselves and no longer dependent on untrustworthy adults. But when illness strikes, Viji must decide whether to risk seeking help from strangers or to keep holding on to their fragile, hard-fought freedom. It takes about 2 Hours and 49 minutes on average for a reader to read The Bridge Home. Really powerful
Derived From Web , Oct 11, 2020
It's a heavy book, Simon says. It's very well written, but I'm a grown up and I cried. The book was chosen by the Girls Leadership Book Club, which has about 750 members. I haven't put it forward yet, but I will. What's more, the report touches on domestic violence, violence from adults, extreme poverty and death in India. Still, it's a stunning book.

Stirring middle grade debut from Padma Venkatraman
Derived From Web , May 9, 2020
Viju runs away from her father to escape a violent life, taking her younger sister Rukku with her into the dangerous streets of Channai. They make friends with two homeless boys, and the four scavenge to scratch out a living until sickness hits, and Viju is faced with a decision that could either make or break them all. It's a while since I read a middle school book. It's also full of heart and intelligence. The author doesn't write down to her young readers, or protect them, or her characters, from the grit and grime of life's underbelly, yet the value of resourcefulness and kindness shines through.

The Beauty of the Human Spirit
Derived From Web , Mar 14, 2020
Such a beautiful and heartbreaking story told through the eyes of a child, which makes it all the more real, Mr Turner said. I am currently reading this to my ninth graders in my biology class and they seem to really like it and they are learning so much about another culture that is so beautiful, I can't stop smiling. I feel so happy taking my students on a field trip that is so much more meaningful and eye-opening.

Took My Breath Away...
Derived From Web , Jun 21, 2019
Four children, all under the age of 12, find themselves on the streets of India, scavenging for food and water. You'll love them immediately. It will break your heart to read vividly of the lengths that they go to survive and you will be filled with hope that they remain resilient through every encounter they face. Based on actual accounts, it is not impossible to be compassionate and empathetic towards the underprivileged children who suffer and are discriminated against based on their caste, gender, ethnicity, etc. An enthralling and endearing story that had me gasping and bawling my eyes out.
