Book Overview

They might be chicks, but they sure aren t chicken, and they re on a mission. And on this, their first (mis)adventure in this delightful spinoff of the J.J. Tully series (Kirkus Reviews), the Chicken Squad launches a galactic backyard expedition.
Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they re too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime.
So when Squirrel comes barreling into the chicken coop, the chicks know they re about to get a case. But with his poor knowledge of shapes ( Big is not a shape, Squirrel ) and utter fear of whatever it is that s out there, the panicky Squirrel is NO HELP. Good thing these chicks are professionals.
But even professionals get worried. Especially once they see that round, shiny, green, BIG thing in the yard. What if it s a UFO full of aliens who want chickens as pets, or worse, dinner? It s up to the Chicken Squad to crack a case that just might be out of this world.

Witty & Terrific Writing! Perfect 1st Chapter Book!
This book has helped spark an interest in reading for my 4 year old. The Chicken Squad is well written and funny for the intended audience. I think ages -5 would understand the humor. I had to explain to him. You can get through it in less than a week if you read a few chapters a day. It teaches more complex shapes. The illustrations give life to the characters. I would recommend it for young readers and their parents.

Its a win-win for teachers and kids...!
This is a great chapter book, and it is perfect for teachers. The story is funny and educational at the same time. You will find inside comparing sizes, increases vocabulary, talks about shapes, and much more! My son enjoyed reading this book. My son wanted to read more after reading it. 5 stars! I would like to read more books from the author. We can't wait to see what else The Chicken Squad can do.

Just as crazy on their own
The J. J. Tully series was a spin- off of this. The chicks have their own shows. The chick gets their first client. Sugar sees the clues differently than other people. J. J. has to come to the rescue but the chick are having fun as they solve their first mystery. The facts should not stand in the way. This series is great for beginning readers.

Cute series. Accessible for early grades
My son loves this series. Cute illustrations and funny characters make for entertaining reads. My kid laughs out loud and has to share some things with me. It's a good scaffolding series to develop skills and work on " novel" length reading with early elementary level readers. It is just good fun.

A great addition to your classroom library.
This is a book series that I love. Second grade is where I teach. These books can be used for read alouds. I use the first book in the series to teach him how to use adjectives in writing to make it more exciting. The kids love to read. They are easy to read and engage with. It's a great addition to your library. !

   Won't purchase the series
I teach 3 rd grade and know kids enjoy reading. I was disappointed when I read the book before putting it in my classroom library. Her work is not her best. The book doesn't have much of a plot even for the reading level.

   She absolutely loved the book
It was hard to find a book for my daughter. She doesn't like princess books or books for girls. Chicken squad was tried. She liked the book. It's a great book for little girls looking for adventure or a mystery. It's funny and silly at the same time.
