   Exceptional series
These Chronicles for older children were first written by my children when they were reading them. I purchased the series and reread them to see how they stood up to time. His journey from boyhood to manhood, and fighting to defend Prydain against the enchantments of evil, has much to say to today's children. Like the movies in the How to Train Your Dragon series, Alexander does not resile from tragedy and sorrow as part of life. I wouldn't be surprised if Alexander was writing today if Eilionwy was even feistier, though she is independent and fighting gender stereotypes from the beginning. It's a good yarn for both genders, but with maturity and wisdom for younger readers. There are Dwarves, by another name, zombies enchanters, warriors and heroes. Beautifully written, with grace and humour, I'm looking forward to introducing the series to my grandchildren.
One a classic, always a classic!
It was a favorite when I was 7. It's great to see the kids love it. I read it at 7, but probably would have been better suited for a decade or two. The vocabulary is a bit esoteric, and I suspect I missed quite a bit, too. And I saw my 7 year-old go through the same thing. I did a lot of reading it to my kids, and pausing frequently to explain a word or passage. Also, they get more complicated and sophisticated as they go up in number. Book 1 and 2 are just exciting adventures, but we abandoned half-way through reading book 3 and book 4 really has adult themes—not sex and violence, I just mean lots of self-introspection and soul-searching. Themes that are bewildering to the too-young. I'll bring it back in a couple years when I think the kids are ready for it.
Classical wonderful saga of good and evil
Classical saga of good and evil, in the class way of The Hobbit and other fantastic stories that develop lives of their own. Beautifully woven story far above most of what has been written about it.
   Simple, but brilliant.
Perfect for people who prefer fast and simple reads over the drawn out plot lines of fantasy epics like "The Wheel of Time" or "A Song of Ice and Fire." What more could you want? Once you memorize the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, you can read the rest. This book is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy.
A good copy considering it was marked used and worn
Exactly what I ordered!!!!!!!!! It's a good copy, considering it was used and was marked and worn. It was a gift and my boyfriend likes actually older copies of books, so it was great! No pages, no rips, no missing or broken covers. It's definitely creased, but again, that's how it was labeled! Great customer service, fast delivery and great buy!
I know she will love to read the entire set
This is a birthday present for my daughter that loves the Disney movie The Black Cauldron that was based on one of these books. I know she will love to read the entire set. She has been looking for it for about five years.
Excellent series! Children as young as 7-8 can enjoy ...
An excellent series of books. Children as young as 7 can enjoy and his adventures with his friends, if parents would like to read this aloud to them. Great all-day discussions, especially if you're homeschooling parents!
   Really fun books.
An excellent set of books. Both children and adults can enjoy these books. I have read thousands of books and rate well written sword and sorcery among the best. The stories are well written and are well worth the read. Good moral lessons for the reader along with adventure and colorful characters.
   Basic beginner fantasy
The plot for all five books was very simple, too obvious to be written. The bard character was a cardboard out cut of dialogue, just there i guess for comic comments and padding for chapters. I guess this was considered an amazing story by some, even if Frey denied it. It was a smash hit, and the plot thickened considerably with the addition of The Black Cauldron. The rest was kind of boring and bland, too.
Nostalgia that still holds up well.
I am re-reading this series as a 52 year old adult, since I loved it so much as a kid in the seventies. It still holds up well and I will pass it on to my friend's son who is an avid book reader. If you have a 10-14 year old who loves fantasy, or if you want to read it as an adult, this is for you! Also, avoid the Disney movie named after the second book, it doesn't reflect the depth of the story at all!
