Book Overview

This book will make a profound difference for the church in this moment in history.
-- The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry

Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It's not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy--on top of decades of systemic decline--have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world.

In this critical yet loving book, the author explores the American story and the Episcopal story in order to find out how communities steeped in racism, establishment, and privilege can at last fall in love with Jesus, walk humbly with the most vulnerable and embody beloved community in our own broken but beautiful way.

The Church Cracked Open invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

   Hope for the Church
This author speaks for the Christian Church in a time of recognition of Jesus'failure to follow him, instead choosing racism, sexism, homophobia, economic oppression, egocentrism and other false gods of the Empire. She shows us the way forward convincingly.

What happened to the Christian church?
If that is your background, you already know, but this insightful book makes it plain.

Should be required reading for Episcopalians
A hearty and level-headed assessment of where we are, where we have been and where we should go as a church community.

   Wonderful opportunity
Stephanie Speakers explores the great opportunity of this past year of great unrest, the opportunity to see the handiwork of the Spirit working through the pandemic and civil chaos of this time. She articulates her hope that this time may become a time of great transformation for Christians and the Church to follow Jesus's way of love, despite the history of the Church as the keeper of the empire more than the keeper of the Way of Jesus.

   Nothing New Under the Son
A substantial amount of this book is exposition and an indictment of Christianity, particularly the Episcopal Church, as a complicit in the Slave Trade and American Chattel Slavery. In the European Empire Building, Colonization and in the Colonization. Most of this I already knew and what I didn 't know was not particularly revelatory. There is also an abundance of sermonizing and heightened language that overwhelms and obscures the value of this book. This value is contained in the framework provided on how to adapt to the brokenness of the church... and also society.

   Well Written
Reverend Spellers shows a path forward in these difficult times. A pathway grounded in the Bible. We would all do well to heed these lessons.

   This work is a blessing.
I am especially grateful for the reflection and action guide you have written and made available to help anyone who reads and studies this book. I can 't wait to share and use it with groups, especially in campus and young adult ministry contexts.
