Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

With stunning artwork and a rhyming text, the illustrator of the Mercy Watson books tells a tale of human-animal connection full of humor and heart.
When a circus ship runs aground off the coast of Maine, the poor animals are left on their own to swim the chilly waters. Staggering onto a nearby island, they soon win over the wary townspeople with their kind, courageous ways. So well do the critters blend in that when the greedy circus owner returns to claim them, villagers of all species conspire to outsmart the bloated blowhard. With buoyant rhymes and brilliantly caricatured illustrations evoking the early nineteenth century, Chris Van Dusen presents a hugely entertaining tale about the bonds of community -- and a rare hidden-pictures spread for eagle-eyed readers of all ages.

Our favorite children's book author and illustrator
The books by Mr Van Dusen are wonderful. There are fun rhymes with great stories. It's fun for the adult to read. My kids enjoy his books. Our preschoolers had a lot of fun looking at the circus page where the mean ringmaster can't force the animals back to work for him because the townspeople are trying to hide them. The author never seems to get lazy with his work. Two of our favorites are Randy Riley and If I built a car. King Hugo's ego is great.

   Implicitly Racist
I would give it one star if I could. The book is racist. The characters are all white. The black ape and brown bear are not hidden in nature. My stomach turned. Black Americans are portrayed as apes.

   A Perfect Picture Book
This is my go to baby gift. The Circus Ship's rhyming is clever, the illustrations are perfect, and there is even a fun seek- and- find part of the story. The Circus Ship has become their favorite story after their child understands it, according to everyone I have given it to. I collect children's books and Chris Van Dusen is the best. I have read all of his books.
