It's five stars because it's the complete work of an author who is considered the best in the genre. I find her work mostly unreadable, but so many people I respect love her, that I'm willing to accept it's my problem, not hers. It could grow on me over time. It's serious work, and gives a lot to chew on in a short space each time.

Brilliant

The woman is a master. She tells people in short stories about ironies, events and situations. It's brilliant. She can reveal a lot in a half page. I have a copy of this that is worn out from reading over and over. It's not for everyone.

The book is lovely and has a tender coral tone, so I' ll start with the physical aspects. Such space and stories that capture the essence of a moment is a disgrace. In this book, what you just read has so much to do with you and you marvel at how witty you can be, that's what some books ask us to be lost in.

An idyllic oasis in a sea of cacophonous mediocrity

I received a collection of Stephen King stories the day I received this book. Mr. King works as a mechanic. Ms. Davis brings her love for the English language to her work in ways that show how great art can bring joy and delight at the same time.

A Different Short Story Experience

A pioneer in short story writing. The collection is between one sentence and 10 page stories. The lack of exterior action or conflict resolution is still compelling.

Lovely book to read in spurts

I am enjoying the humor of Lydia Davis and the book is thick. There are lots of pieces. I read about her in The New Yorker. I like the stories of William and Alice, butLydia Davis is a little bit weirder.
