You Can Effectively Parent an Adopted or Foster Child
Parenting under the best of circumstances is difficult, but because of their unique needs, raising children from hard places brings additional challenges. You might discover that traditional techniques that may have worked for you with your birth children are not working with your adopted or foster child.
Renown child development expert Dr. Karyn Purvis will give you practical advice and powerful tools you can use to encourage secure attachment in your child, just as she did for coauthor Lisa Qualls. You will benefit from Karyn's decades of research and understanding, plus Lisa's hands-on experience and successful implementation of the strategies shared in this book.
You will learn how to simplify your approach using scripts, nurture your child, combat chronic fear, teach respect, and develop other valuable skills to add to your parenting toolbox.
Parenting with Trust and Connection will help you lovingly guide your children and bring renewed hope and healing to your family.

Basic & short on specific situations
Derived From Web , Mar 7, 2021
I found it to be very short on real life strategies and basic concepts. The child won't put on shoes or run down the street if the bus arrives in 10 minutes, it's real life. The author had her children for years before discovering these techniques and also these are children adopted from overseas and so not foster careadoption situations.

Helpful Scripts and Stories

The Connected Parent book reminded me of the things I learned when we adopted our kids. It made me realize that speaking in a soft tone and making eye contact are powerful tools I can use to connect with my child who is chronically afraid. I'm thankful for the reminder that my kids need to feel safe before they can thrive, and for the stories Lisa shared so I can see what parenting this way looks like in real- life situations.

The Foster Care System is a must read for anyone who is touched by it. The Connected Child was a great follow- up. " The Connected Parent" is a must read for foster parents, adoptive parents and social workers. It gives real- life examples of using the strategies, as well as giving " Key Takeaways" and " Try It Today" at the end of each chapter. The reader can think about the concepts, determine what might work for their family and move into action. The book offers hope, understanding, healing and a breath of fresh air for anyone serving children who have experienced trauma. These methods are how Jesus would want us to help our children. encouragement, inspiration and education needed on your journey through foster care/adoption!
Derived From Web , Jul 10, 2020
Foster care adoption needs inspiration and education, and this book is the one for you. For the past 8 years, I have worked with children from hard places. I have practiced TBRI for 8 months. I am training my staff and parents to read The Connected Parent and I am so excited to share the information with them. There are examples of how to put into practice what TBRI teaches. Lisa shows how TBRI affects all of our relationships, not just our relationship with our children from hard places. Despite the importance of the message, this is an easy read. I like the Key Take Away and Try IT Today at the end of each chapter. If I hadn't taken a hundred notes, they would make sure I didn't miss anything.

A Must Read for ALL Foster and Adoptive Families
Derived From Web , Jul 9, 2020
The book The Connected Child was recommended by me when we began our fosteradoption journey. I had to buy a second copy after reading and referencing it so often. Karyn Purvis was brilliant. I learned a lot from her book and it saved our family. When I saw that this book was coming out, I was so excited. Karyn Purvis and Lisa Qualls are perfect for this. The Connected Child didn't give an inside view of what these situations look like in a family. Lisa Qualls shares real- life examples that are easy to relate to. The Connected Parent has a lot of useful tools for foster and adoptive families. I will send a new book to my foster parents.
