Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In this Newbery Honor book classic, young Sarah learns how to be brave even when the world is strange and new.

In 1707, young Sarah Noble and her father traveled through the wilderness to build a new home for their family. Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble, her mother had said, but Sarah found that it was not always easy to feel brave inside. The dark woods were full of animals and Indians, too, and Sarah was only eight

The true story of Sarah's journey is inspiring. And as she cares for her father and befriends her Indian neighbors, she learns that to be afraid and to be brave is the greatest courage of all.

The New York Times Book Review described this book as one to be long remembered for its beautifully written simplicity and dignity.

   Great book for young readers
I think this is a great story about life in the early days, Raymond said. It was a great introduction to the world of music. Young readers, too.

We really enjoyed reading this book as a family
It was a great read, said Kim, "especially as a family." McKinlay said Maddox was 3 years old and had a good reputation. It was short, but the author did a fantasic job. It would be a first for a girl in 3 or 4 years old to read a book by herself or with a family member. It was a great read, said Gillian.

I always have loved this book
It's a great book, I've read it many, many times. It was one of the first books I read as a kid and I always checked it out from my school's library. I'm a huge fan of the book and the characters, too. It was the first book I ever read that got me into history and reading historical fiction.

he said it was an easy read and had no problem doing the required school ...
My son had to read this for school, he said it was an easy read and had no problem doing the required homework that went along with it. To me, that means he absorbed what he read in the book.

High quality writing and moral character
It took my child less than an hour to read the entire book. She really loved it and so did I, and I'm currently reading it aloud to our othet children. This book is an excellent addition to our homeschool library of books with high quality writing and building moral character.

Be prepared to balance with facts about Native Americans
This is a respected piece of children's literature because of its award status, he said. But parents and teachers must be prepared to have serious conversations about the portrayal of Native Americans and the true role of white settlers as usurpers of indigenous lands. It took a few weeks with more indigenous-positive literature and visiting indigenous sites to rebalance some mistaken impressions of this book.

   Outdated
The way they spoke about the Indians made me uncomfortable and the Bible is referenced several times, which I wasn't expecting. Because it is not for use, we won't be reading it again.
