The Cricket In Times Square
Book Overview
Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he'd seen it all. But he's never met a cricket before, which really isn't surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City--the Times Square subway station. Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He'd be there still if he hadn't followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone's picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides--and friends--than Tucker and Harry. The trio have many adventures--from taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway to escaping a smoky fire.
Chester makes a third friend, too. It is a boy, Mario, who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents' newsstand. He hopes at first to keep Chester as a pet, but Mario soon understands that the cricket is more than that. Because Chester has a hidden talent and no one--not even Chester himself--realizes that the little country cricket may just be able to teach even the toughest New Yorkers a thing or two.
The Cricket in Times Square is a 1961 Newbery Honor Book.

Great book for mid-elementary level
Lynn , May 13, 2023
This is a delightful book which I have used several times in my classroom. The characters are entertaining, the story is wholesome, and my students have always enjoyed it. I like that they learn a bit about other cultures and environments as well as some simpler literary elements.

Great Book

The book is truly amazing, Turner said. I'm not a huge fan of ending a story with a bang. I suggest this book to anyone who can read it.

Thanks for the fast delivery! It arrived in time for my grand daughter's birthday and she's going to Times Square next week! We're in the middle of a tough period of cricket, so it's of particular interest to her. Thanks again for your patience.

Great for my son

It's in brand new condition,' said Gillian Kent, director of marketing at Argos. The book is described as follows: "This is a great introduction to the world of fiction. My son can't wait to read it, because it has a cat and mouse, his mom said. He's a big animal lover, and he has a very good eye for detail, McCartney said. Thanks for visiting!

Beautiful story of friendship and loyalty
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I've read all the books, but this was by far the best. It was a blast, I read it with my 10 year old who usually hates reading. We loved the two scenes, the human world and the friendship between the boy and the cricket, and the behind-the-animal world with the unlikely friendship that formed between the cricket, mouse and cat. The love and self sacrifice that all the characters had toward one another was just beautiful.

A Childhood Favorite
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I first read this book in elementary school. It wasn't a required book to read, but I just chose it because I was intrigued by the plot. Because this was during the day and age pre-video games, a great book was an important find. It was a blast, and I disappeared into it and loved being in the subway, visiting the newsstand and almost smelling the newspapers, taking a trip to Chinatown. Even after all these years, I still remember this book fondly and I was actually looking to see if it was in EBook form because I thought it would be great to read again. It's still not ready, we're working on it, Mr. Dhaliwal said. I still have the book and the men of iron by Howard Pyle.

I really didn't care that it was such great shape! It's such a winner

This is really, really serious stuff, Mr. Rule told the judge. I almost know this story by heart since my Dad and I read it together, and when he wasn't available, mom, can you come in here? It's the kind of book that is such a good story, but on top of that great plot, to have such adorable animals, thank you, Mr. Williams. Thanks for the great service, said Dr. Caramore. It's just that nice to give as a present. It's great to be back home, said Blair. It was the first time I felt so happy. And, on top of Selden's wonderful way of telling a story, to have illustrating Garth Williams. Only he could make three small creatures, including a cricket, and still sport a full head of hair.

A great classic of a time in New York that has mostly vanished
Derived From Web , Sep 24, 2021
A sweet, poignant story about a little cricket who finds himself in the Times Square subway stop and just wants to go home to Connecticut. I've been reading this to children for decades and while times have certainly changed, the story about the desire to go home is always timeless.
