   More Than a Stereotype
The Crossover is a basketball story. It is a universal story with educated, black characters of growing up, of family and of love told in narrative verse. Alexander deals with some contemporary issues of black life of driving while black, of the consequences for black men who do not regulate their temper, of poor diet and not seeking medical treatment, and of black men who do not seek medical treatment. At its core, the story is about the love between twin brothers who think they are drifting apart as they go through puberty and the role basketball plays in healing them through their obstacles. Those who love poetry, basketball, or may be reluctant readers will enjoy The Crossover.

   You don't have to love basketball to like The Crossover (although it wouldn't hurt)
The Crossover is unusual. Children are lit in the form of poetry and have a definite story line. The story is about a junior high school kid, Josh and his parents and twin brother, Jordan. There is a book about basketball. The twins' father was an NBA player who played briefly in Italy. Their mom is a vice principal. I don't like basketball, I'm past school age, and I'm not fond of poetry, so I had reason to suspect that I wouldn't like this book. I enjoy good writing, and by the end of it, I found that I enjoyed it a lot. I think it is a strange choice for the Newbery. It is a very different book but the story is universal. I was glad I read it.

   Excellent Read - One of the best of the year
I was curious how a book about basketball could win the medal. It didn't take me long to figure out why. The book has a good style of writing. There is a story about the family dynamics of twin brothers of a pro basketball player. There is a certain amount of jealousy and competition between the two brothers, who are very different in nature. There is a theme of love and pride in the family, but the brothers are going to react in different ways. This is a touching book.

   The Crossover is a Must Read for Junior High Students
I really enjoyed the book IA B.O.S.S., which had some basketball content and middle- grade boy friends that I really liked. I was intrigued when I came across The Crossover. The author was not disappointed. There is a tight plot in the book that includes family, friendship, love, health, and more. A masterpiece is achieved by telling a story in short rhythms. The essence of being in junior high is captured by the fact that Josh and Jordan Bell are twins. This is a good book for kids of all ages. It's an easy read with a touching story. The vocabulary words introduced in the book are difficult to understand.

   Not appropriate for elementary aged child
This book is not suitable for a young child. I had heard good things about basketball. I realized it was inappropriate for an elementary aged child when I read it ahead of him.

   12 year old daughter loved it.
My 12 year old daughter liked the book. She picked this book because of a recommendation from a friend. She requested the other books in the series after she read this one. I wasn't sure if she would like it since the main characters are boys. She is a huge basketball fan so that helped her connect to the story. There are some themes that parents may want to discuss with their children. I didn't read it before her, but she talked to me about them after she read it. If you are buying this for your child, you should check in with them after they read it to discuss.

   Defective copy— wish I realized sooner.
I bought this book for my classroom because I loved the audio book and wanted to read it again. The page numbers are all mixed up, as if there was an error in the binding process, according to one of my students. Poems are cut off in my copy. For reference, see the photos.
