A haunting examination of groupthink and mass hysteria in a rural community, presented here with enlightening criticism and commentary

I believe that the reader will discover here the essential nature of one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history, Arthur Miller wrote in an introduction to The Crucible, his classic play about the witch-hunts and trials in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. Based on historical people and real events, Miller's drama is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria.

In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions; and when a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence.

Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's witch-hunts in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing: Political opposition.is given an inhumane overlay, which Read More chevron_right

   NOT unabridged!
Note that this is not an unabridged version of the story. Late yesterday, I found an incomprehensible error in the Unabridged version. Imagine my surprise when I put this on for my students to follow along and only to discover that this has slashed away whole portions of the text, making it virtually impossible to follow along with the play. Whole banks of lines are severed in a grotesque turn of fate. The most I can figure out is that anything that doesn't immediately have to do with John, Elizabeth or Abigail is abolished and removed in an effort to condense the play to less than two hours. The customer service was extremely poor and I am very displeased with this purchase.

   a play for our time
One cannot read this play and cannot recognise that we are in the grip of similar demons. No one hangs, thank God, but careers have been shattered and lives uprooted by accusations made in bad faith. America, return to rationality and don't be afraid, amid the clamor about your sins, to remember your goodness, he said.

   Penguin error
The play is perfect. Three of the acts were printed by Penguin. Four are in fact. The introduction is printed again. If you want to read the play, don't buy this edition.

   Penguin error
It's a perfectly fine play, and I think everybody will enjoy it. In fact, Penguin managed to print three of the songs. Four kids were killed in the attack. The printer then prints the introduction a second time. If you want to read the play, you must first buy the t.201 edition.

DONT BUY IT; pages aren’t in order
I ordered mine for my English class, and my book arrived in all scrambled with pages. The first time I entered the book, I was astonished to find that the cover had been misprinted. They call it: "Copyright 1996 All Rights Reserved."

We are Living These Times Again
It's a book that stands in stark relief to today's readers. As I watch history itself, I wonder what is we doing? What do we think we are going to do with ourselves?

We are Living These Times Again
Is that a witch? Racist. The book was very similar. As I watch history repeat, I wonder what we are doing. Salem destroyed himself, are we going to do the same? Please help us.

   Don't buy the Kindle version
The book is a scanned version of the print book. No one has checked it for edits. The words and lines are mashed together and the page headings from the print copy show up throughout the text. I don't know why Amazon is charging money for a version that is hard to read. Try a different edition if you want the Kindle version. It's better to pay $9 for a readable version than $3 for one that isn't readable.

   Don't buy the Kindle version
Simply put, the Kindle version of this book is a scanned version of the printed book. Nobody has edited or corrected the file, nor has it been scanned. The result is a single word document that combines multiple images, creating a single page header from the print copy. If you want the Kindle version, you can try a different edition. Even if you can afford to pay $9 for a readable version, it's still a lot of money.

Flimsy Material, though a great read
Overall, I was not too satisfied with the book, which is very low quality. The book is a great read, though the materials will not last long.
