Book Overview

From a renowned historian who writes with maximum vividness (The New Yorker) comes the most authoritative, readable single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the holy land

Nine hundred years ago, a vast Christian army, summoned to holy war by the Pope, rampaged through the Muslim world of the eastern Mediterranean, seizing possession of Jerusalem, a city revered by both faiths. Over the two hundred years that followed, Islam and Christianity fought for dominion of the Holy Land, clashing in a succession of chillingly brutal wars: the Crusades. Here for the first time is the story of that epic struggle told from the perspective of both Christians and Muslims. A vivid and fast-paced narrative history, it exposes the full horror, passion, and barbaric grandeur of the Crusading era, revealing how these holy wars reshaped the medieval world and why they continue to influence events today.

--Professor John L. Esposito, Director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, and author of The Future of Islam.

Exactly what I was looking for
Very informative and very well written. There are a lot of names, dates and locations thrown at you, so don 't expect to remember most of them. The only critique I have is that I am not satisfied with the maps in the books.

A very readable and timely account of the history that ...
A very readable and timely account of the history that put the pieces in place for the Middle East conflict that continues to this day. When a culture is based on a dogma grounded in obedience and ignorance and is basically unchanging as the rest of the world moves forward. The conflict between the two is inevitable. This book helped me understand the whys and wherefores of how it all came about.

A wonderful work on the Crusades!
I highly recommend '' this book. I picked it up because I wanted to know more about the Crusades and ended up finding a thorough treatment of a very turbulent period of world history! Asbridge also had some very astute observations about policies and practices beginning during the crusades that had a lasting impact on the European landscape in the years that followed.

   Lots of detail
There is a wealth of detail to explore. In fact, there is so much detail that reading can be slow. The writing is unique, nothing workmanlike. Three stars seem to be just right.

Much more to Crusades than what you learned in school
There was personal motivation behind the Crusades, but it could not overcome the real religious ambitions of many of the Crusaders. Neither the Christians nor the Muslims could maintain the unity needed to win permanently, so the wars lasted for 200 years.

   Authoritative by whose standard?
Asbridge begins his history in 1095, but it really begins with Abraham and God's promised land to Abraham and his descendants. After Christ came approx. 600 yrs later with his war against the infidels. I could tell where his writing would take me... The Christians are the cause of where we are today in Islamic relations with respect to the world. If I could have given this book even 1 star.

Detailed descriptions of events will take you right back in time...........
To me, it was difficult to imagine the absolute belief of people in those days that God watched their every move. How strongly does one have to believe that God has watched that even kings of nations threw their fortunes and positions on the side to take such a long and hazardous trip on foot and horseback? The details described by Asbridge are amazing and they took me right back in time, if that's possible.
