When you feel different you are not alone.
Derived From Web , Oct 17, 2020
It can be difficult to be different in a classroom. Maybe you have something in common with everyone else, but not always. A girl is new. The other children are curious. She is worried that she doesn't look like them. People in the class wonder as well. Is it their hair, skin color, lunch meals, or the way they speak? When you don't know what to say or how to play, what happens? You just have to be brave. Kids are having doubts about being different. Young readers will see that we are all different. The illustrations show the emotion of the characters. Poetic verse is calming. The book can be used to discuss how kids are different and how they are the same.

The book was hard to follow. It wasn't a natural storyline and was just a confusing book. The illustrations were lovely.

Tender, beautiful, sure to be loved by ages 2-10
Derived From Web , Dec 19, 2019
This is a beautiful, captivating story that is beautifully illustrated. Children from 2 to 10 years old will love the words and pictures. Every child can relate to at least one aspect of the story on a personal level or in relation to someone they may know. In one section, a child says his name is like a musical song once again when spoken by his teacher - tears come to my eyes each time I read these words. Every page has a different perspective on how a child may feel at school. In the end, the children realize that we are all similar.

For Everyone
Derived From Web , Sep 25, 2018
The Day You Begin is a beautiful depiction of what it feels like to be an outsider in a world that can be cruel. The text and illustrations encourage us to be ourselves and hold on. When that friend comes along who accepts who we are, that's the day we begin. A book for people with special connections.

This celebrates strength that is yet to be discovered inside young people, along with similarities they have yet to discover in strangers who will become their friends. It will speak to all children. Excellent combination of the written word and illustration with high production values. It is highly recommended.

Start your school year with this book!
Derived From Web , Aug 29, 2018
This is the best book for the beginning of a new school year I have ever encountered! The book rises to the top of Woodson's many amazing works and is one of my all-time favorite authors. You need this book if you live with children of any age. Adults need this book! Picture books are not just for children, and this book tells a story that may be universally felt. I will be reading it to 60 preservice teachers today.
