Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

A pioneering physician reveals how childhood stress can lead to lifelong health problems, and shows us what we can do to break the cycle.

Two-thirds of us have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, or ACE, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance dependence, or mental illness. Even though these events may have occured long ago, they have the power to haunt us long into adulthood, and now we have found that they may even contribute to lifelong illness.

Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the founder/CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, expands on similar topics as in her popular TED talk as she demystifies the connection between adversity and ill health. After surveying more than 17,000 adult patients, she found that the higher a person's ACE score, the worse their health. This led Burke Harris to an astonishing breakthrough--childhood stress changes our neural systems and its impact lasts a lifetime.

Through vivid storytelling that combines both scientific insight with deeply moving stories about her patients and their families, Burke Harris illuminates her journey of discovery from the academy to her own pediatric practice in San Francisco's poverty-ridden Bayview Hunters Point. She re-roots the story Read More chevron_right

Must read in trauma informed care!
Such a good book! Such a good book! I have done a lot of reading on trauma and this is a must read. Burke Harris has been such a driving force behind the trauma intervention and this book is so well written and easy to read. I read the whole thing in a matter of a few days and would love a follow-up book! ! !

Not a book to help those who went through this.
I’m glad the doctor made the connection, but like Deb D, I was looking for more practical assistance. Being on a scale of 8 already damaged, but there is nothing to help those who have already suffered. I expected too much from you.

This should be required reading for all the medical field.
PTSD is more common in society than ever. Doctors need to realise this and suggest alternative help before pushing pills.

Okay, But Hoped For More Practical Help
Based on all the 5 star reviews, I absolutely wanted to love this book. And the first chapter gets suck in and really does your interest. But be aware that a lot of the book contains a lot of scientific info, which is fine and a lot of the writer's own experiences in researching these links. I was, however, hoping for some practical info on how to treat the overstimulated nervous system. Is overall worthy of a read, but I can only justify more than 3 stars.

Uncovering the toxic stress so many children face each day.
An amazing exploration of childhood adversity, its trauma and the importance of addressing it as a public health issue. What happens to our disadvantaged communities and the children growing up in them? A personal and compassionate science-based but compelling.

One of the best books I've ever read
I could not put this book down. It addresses one of the major health issues of our time, the effect of stressful events on our health over a lifetime - and what we can do to help our minds and bodies heal. In a world that seems more stressful every day, the information here could help all of us.
