A triumphantly moving book. --Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Hannah dreads going to her family's Passover Seder--she's tired of hearing her relatives talk about the past. But when she opens the front door to symbolically welcome the prophet Elijah, she's transported to a Polish village in the year 1942. Why is she there, and who is this Chaya that everyone seems to think she is? Just as she begins to unravel the mystery, Nazi soldiers come to take everyone in the village away. And only Hannah knows the unspeakable horrors that await. A critically acclaimed novel from multi-award-winning author Jane Yolen.
Yolen] adds much to understanding the effects of the Holocaust, which will reverberate throughout history, today and tomorrow. --SLJ, starred review

Great book

It's just incredible, said Douglas Lindner, executive director of the Simon Property Group. It gives a new perspective that we might not have considered. 0 1462228 This is very serious," said Robert Hemenway, who heads NASA's Ames Research Center in California. Though this book is amazing it is this way _ now ill-tell without sharing too much _ because in the book it shows a hint of reality without being real and also adds to the feel of what exactly the Jews had gone through when dealing with this insanity. I definitely recommend this to all and I believe that children, Christian - much like myself - would enjoy this book and even parents and teachers, Morgenthau said. It has a 5 star rating, which is very high.

Excellent
Derived From Web , Apr 15, 2021
It's one of the best ratings I've ever received. Note the subheading of this terrible parable in the "Robinson Crusoe" series: "My grandson was reading it to school." I wanted to see what he was learning, Mrs. O'Neill said. In this book, you will find, in a simple yet realistic way, some of the horrors of the holocaust. I liked the way they brought it all together, in the midst of constant atrocity and death, Raymond said. His wife said that her husband's interest lay in the history of Germany. It was a book he would have loved to have read.

The Devil's Arthimatic

The book is very good, too, said Dr. Charles Bloom, who co-chaired the inquiry. In this book, the author takes us on a journey of remembrance. She is transported back in time to the days of her family when they became prisoners in a German camp during World War II. But she will never forget the price her ancestors paid for their Jewish heritage. Please recommend this book to your friends.

A book every YA should read
Derived From Web , Feb 23, 2018
It should be on every YA reading list. The way in which Yolen communicates the atrocities of WWII, the way she exquisitely works in how resistance was living to tell the story, is just marvellous. There are just not that many stars left for this book.

Excellent book to introduce students to WW2.
Derived From Web , Nov 21, 2017
I was immediately drawn into the plight of the main character as she was sent back to World War II a few months into the war. As a bonus, the Aradian reveals many Jewish beliefs and traditions that appear in the lives of the characters. I read this story to both a third and fourth-grade classroom. The students were spellbound as the story unfolded. This led to many discussions and questions about why the war was fought, why the Jewish families were treated with increasing harshness and why the German army was able to hold on to power. The prison camps and terrible conditions in them shocked and worried me. What a great book to help children understand what happened in World War II.
