Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Restored in this Definitive Edition are diary entries that had been omitted from the original edition. These passages, which constitute 30 percent more material, reinforce the fact that Anne was first and foremost a teenage girl, not a remote and flawless symbol. She fretted about, and tried to cope with, her own emerging sexuality. Like many young girls, she often found herself in disagreement with her mother. And like any teenager, she veered between the carefree nature of a child and the full-fledged sorrow of an adult. Anne emerges more human, more vulnerable, and more vital than ever. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse for two years. She was thirteen when the family went into the Secret Annex, and in these pages she grows to be a young woman and a wise observer of human nature as well. With unusual insight she reveals the relations between eight people living under extraordinary conditions, facing hunger, the everpresent threat of discovery and death, complete estrangement from the outside world, and above all, the boredom, the petty misunderstandings, and the frustrations of living under such unbearable strain, in such confined quarters. A timeless story rediscovered by each new generation. The Diary of a Young Girl Read More chevron_right

a little light dispels a lot of darkness
This is one of the best books I've ever read. Ms. Frank gives a face to someone that lived through one of the most horrible periods in modern civilization, and she also gives hope to so many people. This book has touched many people. I have read it many times as a child and as an adult, and each time I find something new in it. Everyone needs to read this book so that they never forget what happened and never take anything for granted.

It was amazing to me how grown up this little girl was
I didn't remember much about it, but I had read it in school. I was amazed at how mature this little girl was. You had to grow up fast in those circumstances. She was a great writer for a young person. She wrote a lot of good stuff. She didn't know her writing would become renowned. You can tell I enjoyed it.

   Wonderful Sadness
I was intrigued by Anne and her life when I first read this. I understood her problems as I started feeling connected to her. I knew we would be the best of friends and I would have missed her. She died in a concentration camp at the end of the book. I was devastated that I knew her so well. Anne Frank was a normal teen, but also a fighter. She was an amazing woman and did not deserve to die. None of the other Jews did during world war two. The book helped me understand Anne's world and not the war.

   Who can't like this book
We know the end of the book and it's not good, but we still like it. An innocent is not a good world. She keeps her spirit alive. I've visited her quarters. They were in such tight quarters that they lived there for a long time. Everyone should read this book and relive her man's inhumanity. Amen, we must help others not hurt them.

   Great reading.
The world suffered a tragic loss when Anne Frank died. If she were allowed to live her entire life, what would she become? Her writings are just thoughts and feelings and the day to day goings on of people forced into hiding are hard to put down. I recently realized that I had never actually read before. I highly recommend the book and I am glad I have it. I want to read more books about Anne and her family.

   Good Book, Bad Font
The print was hard to read. The size of the fonts used was very small. The book is a bit more graphic and I have not read it before. It's a good read.

   SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTENT!!!
I was horrified that I bought this version for my son. There are sexually explicit details of the female. He is so embarrassed that this caught us completely by surprise. Parents need to be aware of this. !

   An important and timeless book
Every year around my birthday, I make it a point to read Anne Frank's diary, since I first read it in high school. I see things differently now as I get older, it's amazing. The election of a psycopathic dictator turned an ordinary, middle class life completely upside down, according to Anne Frank's diary. Anne's diary entries help us understand what it's like to go from being a member of the community to a hated, feared and hunted minority. It's amazing to see how vulnerable reality is and how anyone, regardless of their race, sexuality, gender, politics or other affiliations, could become the next outcast. Peace and democracy are fragile gifts which should be protected from anyone who tries to leverage hate and tribalism for the sake of gaining power.

Best if you have a dram of scotch to toast this wonderful little girl.
The film of the liberation of the camps and the survivors should be watched by people who use the term Nazi lightly. It is a 13 year old girl. It is masterful. I made sure my children and grandchildren were well taken care of, not just for the humanity, but also for the callous way certain people term others NAZIs. The tomb helps.
