Book Overview

From ghost story master Mary Downing Hahn, the haunting tale of a mysterious doll discovered in a young girl's garden, and its owner, a girl from seventy years in the past, who wants it back.

A suspenseful story of unexpected connections between present and past. Ashley and her mother need their new apartment to work out, but everything Ashley does seems to upset the irritable and unforgiving landlady. When Ashley makes friends with the girl next door, Kristi, they uncover a wooden box containing a well-loved turn-of-the-century doll. Ashley wants to keep the doll for herself, but Kristi has other ideas. So does the doll's original owner, a girl who died decades ago, but whom Ashley meets when she follows a mysterious white cat through a hedge. Can Ashley bring peace to the girl and resolve her own present-day challenges?

   Always wonderful reads
I am of course way over the target age for Mary's books. However, I love them really and share them with the target audience. I will never read a book with a kid without sharing it first, just in case. I read Marian because I enjoy the stories too - that is just my excuse! She has a talent for delivering on-point characters and story lines that also have valuable lessons. Their material teaches morals, compassion, empathy and so much more. They are also stories that can be very important for children going through something similar to what the characters are enduring in the story line. In this case, moving to a new location after becoming lost a parent and all of the things that go with it. It is a beautiful little mystery and ghost story all rolled into one about struggle, friendship and doing what's right. It is a five-star audiobook, read by a five-star author.

   simple is often better
This story shows that sometimes the most simple of plots makes the best story. After her father died of cancer, Ashley and her mother move to the extra room of a house. The house owner is a bad woman who doesn 't get along with anyone. Ashley and her new friend next door discover a doll buried with a note in the garden. The one who will soon learn that the owner of the doll died back in 1914 and her ghost has haunted the house owner, wanting to bring back the doll. It is up to Ashley and her new friend to convince the bad old woman to return the doll to an owner who is long dead.

A four-star story with formatting issues in the Kindle edition.
Unfortunately, the e-book I purchased had a number of formatting errors (example eves instead of eyes, up instead of lip, Kristd instead of Kristi ). This could be very frustrating for young readers for whom this book is written.

   The doll in the garden
I liked this book because it was about children, a ghost cat, an old doll and how the children helped their elderly neighbor have peace of mind about something she had stolen when she was a child.

   Spell check????
While the story is good and but did anyone bother to read this book proof? Per page, several. I would not want a child to read this and think that these errors are okay.

It wasn't the BEST Mary Downing Hahn books
This book was not the best book she has written. The book Wait until Helen Comes '' was better than this. But if you like horror, read this book ahead and. It is actually worth the time!
