This Description may be from another edition of this product.

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is an activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children's book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. During the holiday season, the elf watches children by day and reports to Santa each night. When children awake, the elf has returned from the North Pole and can be found hiding in a different location. This activity allows The Elf on the Shelf to become a delightful hide-and-seek game.

   A new tradition
My 3 year old daughter missed her elf, Snowflake after Christmas, so when I saw it, I knew her day would be made! A few days before her birthday, I gave her the book and loved the story. She was so excited to visit Snowflake. I really love the idea of the birthday chair, it is a tradition that will keep that made my daughter feel extra special. The cupcake dress for the elf is very cute and festive. I felt like the story did not have the same rhyming flow as the book The Christmas Traditions, but my daughter loves it so I still give it 5 stars. I would recommend this to anyone who loves their Christmas elf on the shelf.

   kids dig it!
It is a great read and the kids got the concept immediately. However, I gave this to my niece and nephew as a wrapped Christmas gift, which they opened a few days before Christmas. The children went right for the doll in the heat of the moment, begging for their mother to free him from his little box, and immediately obliged. My attempt to explain the story and the doll was lost in the frenzy of excitement. If you plan to wrap this great gift, be sure to write adults ahead of time on what the story and the doll are about, so that they can all follow the rules and get the most out of it. In hind sight, I would have brought this unwrapped maybe on Thanks Giving Day and given it to Mom in secret, so she set the Elf up in advance and surprised the kids with a new bedtime story that night... It is really great!

Wonderful and Fun for Children of All Ages!
I can not say enough about this book and the doll. I had days of fun putting it around the house for my grand children's benefit. They loved looking for the next place he was hidden. The story was read over and over by request, and it kept them on their best behavior, knowing that Santa's elf was watching their every move. I ended up buying it from Barne's and Noble because after ordering from a Amazon - supported seller and being told I would receive it before Christmas, I received an email telling me that I would receive it until January 15. Obviously, too late for the holiday season. Amazon '' reimbursed my money without any issues.

   Really wanted to like it..
I was hoping that this would be a fun tradition to start since SO many people are into it. I know it is supposed to be fun and I have read other reviewers telling people who don 't like it to relax, but I have to agree that the tone and message of the story is totally not up my alley as far as parenting philosophy goes. As I read through the story, I tried with it, but just couldn t hang in there with the whole being watched and reported for being good or bad concept, especially since it didn 't let up. I even wondered about keeping the Elf, spinning the book and skipping it in our own way, but I couldn 't justify it for $30. If you are the kind of parent who uses positive discipline, you probably won 't appreciate it, either. I learned a lesson by paying the nearly $7 in return shipping.

   BEST purchase I've ever made!!!
This started in our household so many wonderful, memorable traditions. I can 't wait to see the joy on my son's face every year when it is time for our Elf to come visit for the month of December. He talks to it and looks forward to it all year round. One of the best purchases I ever made is absolutely one of the BEST. There are sooo many ideas of where to hide your elf on Pinterest. You never run out of ideas. If you are considering purchasing one of these for your child, DO IT!!!
