Book Overview

Introduction by Mary Oliver
Commentary by Henry James, Robert Frost, Matthew Arnold, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Henry David Thoreau

The definitive collection of Emerson's major speeches, essays, and poetry, The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson chronicles the life's work of a true American Scholar. As one of the architects of the transcendentalist movement, Emerson embraced a philosophy that championed the individual, emphasized independent thought, and prized the splendid labyrinth of one's own perceptions. More than any writer of his time, he forged a style distinct from his European predecessors and embodied and defined what it meant to be an American. Matthew Arnold called Emerson's essays the most important work done in prose.

You will need a good notebook to write down all the magnificent thoughts and ideas that this man has discovered and shared with the world. Emerson is truly a fan of my character.

   Very Deep
I received it as I heard Wayne Dyer recommend it as one of his readings. However, it is excellent to read and not to sit down. I keep it handy and open it for a short interlude every other day or two.

   One of the absolute classics
It is to be useful, honorable, to be compassionate, to know that you have lived well and to know that even one life breathed easier because you have lived. Ralph Waldo Emerson is Ralph Waldo Emerson's first name. In my spiritual family tree, Emerson occupies the great grandfather slot ( i.e. I love the man truly. You can feel his energy from his powerful essays and if you have not yet read his work, I highly recommend it. I'd suggest that you start with self-reliance and then with nature, compensation, spiritual laws, heroism, and circles. If you're like me, his eloquence, transcendent quotability, and passion for each of us to experience the eminent joy that results from connecting with our highest self will often leave you in awe.

   Amazon's slipping.
The book is wonderful, but AMAZON did their usual crappy packaging. I had 4 books that needed pressing page. Their system leaves much to be desired.

   I am not let down!
You are definitely getting your money's worth! I can not wait to read it all. I love his work and how his words can paint in my mind a picture.

Emerson's work is food for the soul
Here and a little there, read a little. This is not a cover author. Just connect it anywhere and open to something far greater.

Huge and heavy for a paperback with tissue thin paper, very small print and marvelous contents. Worth the extra effort in reading these choice pieces in a convenient collection at this bargain price.
